When we spoke to the author, MIZUSAWA (circle name), he told us that this was his first original manga. He talked about a wide range of topics, from the background of the work’s creation to advice for those who are just starting out in doujin activities.
Synopsis of “When I woke up, I was attacked by a girl out of my league (aka Takaoso)”
Nishimura Sota, who cannot leave people in trouble, helps Miyazaki Haruto who is being molested on the train. Nishimura had no interest in romance, but from that moment on he started to be interested in Miyazaki, who was the unattainable girl in his class, and the two of them began to grow closer. Worried that Miyazaki was living alone, Nishimura asked if he wanted to stay over, and Miyazaki gladly welcomed him. However, while talking to Miyazaki, Nishimura suddenly felt sleepy…

–How did “Takaoso” come about?
MIZUSAWA: I had a vague idea that “it would be good if the stalker was the bottom,” and after deciding on the visual first, I proceeded in this way: “If it’s this visual, it should be something like this…”
I had the feeling of “Let’s draw one (manga) for now!”
- Were there any points that you paid particular attention to when creating the work?
MIZUSAWA: I was particular about the visuals!! (laughs)
It was my first manga and I had just started drawing, so I just wanted to draw the characters’ faces beautifully.
I had the impression that cute girls were popular, so I thought I’d make the uke (Miyazaki)’s visual cute.

–Please tell us about the characters.
MIZUSAWA: They both seem to be out of control because of the strength of their feelings for each other.
Miyazaki-kun is a character who is conflicted within himself. He wants to monopolize Nishimura-kun, he wants to have him at all costs, but he doesn’t want him to hate him, and he knows he’s doing something wrong. He is trapped by such guilt.
On the other hand, Nishimura-kun also appears kind at first glance, but he also has a jealous side. I hope people will find each of their complicated sides cute.
–This is your first original manga, but what made you start making doujinshi?
MIZUSAWA: It all started because I wanted to work from home.
I’ve always loved commercial BL, and I started relying solely on that passion. Everything from gathering the tools to drawing and releasing it to the world was all new to me, so I was really nervous at first.
–What was particularly difficult about drawing this work?
MIZUSAWA:
The illustrations were really difficult. When I first started, I wasn’t used to drawing pictures, so I re-drew each frame until I was satisfied with them…
The story went pretty smoothly, but the naming and illustrations were really tough.
–Going back to “Takaoso,” can you tell us a little bit about how the story will develop going forward?
MIZUSAWA: There is only a happy ending!!
Personally, I love happy endings, so I only draw happy endings.
–The ending of this episode made me a little uneasy, wondering if it would end happily, so I’m glad it had a happy ending.
MIZUSAWA: I don’t like painful storylines, but (this time) it ended up being painful. I did
n’t want to depict a painful story in the first one either, I just wanted to depict the obstacles that lead to a happy ending.
I’ll end it with a happy ending that’s almost like a punch! (laughs)
I draw with the goal that people who come into contact with my work will feel happy, so I’m happy if they can smile no matter what emotions they feel!
–I see, that’s great! By the way, how many more titles do you plan on releasing in the “Takaoso” series?
MIZUSAWA: The second work has a happy ending, but I would like to continue with the third work and beyond depending on the reaction.
In the third work, I plan to introduce a rival character, who will be unsettling but also flirting… If they become a couple and are really in love, I think it will be the fourth work.
–Finally, MIZUSAWA, who made his doujin debut this year, I’d like to ask you for a message for those who are just starting out in the doujin world.
MIZUSAWAさん：すでにあるものを参考として描くよりは、自分の中にある好きな気持ちを前面に出して描く方が楽しく描けるかなと。自分が楽しく描いたものの方が、反響があったときも嬉しいと思います。
読み手としても「作家さんがこのキャラ好きで描いてるんだろうな」と分かる方が好きですし、そこは読者の方にもきちんと伝わるので、ぜひ好きなものを描くことを大事にしてください！
