This work depicts the various encounters and experiences that the unfortunate young man Sasaki Tsunehiro makes through “fishing.” At Animate Times, we had a long talk with Director Uemura and Mutsumi Iwanaka, who plays Sasaki Tsunehiro, about their impressions of each episode and recording episodes!
This is a weekly interview that looks back on each episode, which is updated on Fridays after each episode is broadcast. This time, we will be talking about episode 2, “Fishing at the Pool.” It is full of spoilers, so please watch each episode before reading!
–Before I ask about your thoughts on episode 2, the opening and ending themes have been added from this episode, so I’d like to hear about those as well.
Mutsumi Iwanaka (hereinafter, Iwanaka): I really like Van de Shop’s “Ito” because it’s a really catchy song. The animation is also beautifully drawn. Watching it makes me want to go fishing. There are all kinds of fishing equipment and fish, and it really feels like “this is a fishing anime,” which I really like.
The ending song “Desire for Approval” by 96neko is also wonderful. It’s a wonderful song that makes you feel like you’re in the evening in the city, and even if you go to a quiet place, you can imagine the hustle and bustle of people from afar, the wind, and the sound of a train passing by. It’s a really stylish song that makes you feel like you’re in the evening. I love it.
–What were your thoughts after watching episode 2?
Iwanaka: Episode 2… I remember I was still really nervous (laughs). I was nervous during the post-recording, but conversely, I felt like that nervousness was reflected a little in the episode. When I actually came to the post-recording site and said, “Ah, I’m the main character,” it was a little similar to the opening line, where I said, “Huh? I don’t have a home.”
But Tsunehiro has had a terrible time. In the first episode, he tries to take his own life, and at the end, he has no home!? And then in the second episode, it starts again with him having no home. But I think the second episode made me really look forward to what’s to come.
Uemura Yasushi (hereinafter, Uemura): The scene with Hana-chan that is also the thumbnail of this PV is in episode 2, and I thought that she had a really wonderful smile when I watched it. I really like Hana-chan’s love of fishing, and I think she has a sincere feeling towards people. I think it’s a good episode that really shows that kind of thing.
