[Nijisanji GTA] Unforgettable memories of Nijisanji. What is the mega project “Nijisanji GTA” in which over 100 Nijisanji Livers participated? We look at its appeal and the reasons for its great success”NijiGTA” is a mega project hosted by Nijisanji’s Kanae and Hoshikawa Sara in June 2024. Participating streamers live as residents of a fictional town called “Nijisantos,” playing various roles on a custom server for the game “Grand Theft Auto.”

This was the first time Nijisanji livers had gathered on the same server since “NijiARK” in 2020, but more than 100 livers participated during the event, creating an excitement similar to that of a tournament.

Even after the project ended, many streamers and viewers called for the next one to be held, making “Niji GTA” a popular project. In this article, we will look back on the contents of the project, discuss its appeal, and the reasons why this first attempt was successful.

The game used in “Niji GTA” is the latest installment of the “Grand Theft Auto” series, “Grand Theft Auto V,” abbreviated as “GTAV.” In the main story, the player plays a scenario in which the protagonist, who has a criminal record in the past, once again becomes involved in crime.

However, when talking about GTAV, the existence of online servers is indispensable. The setting is the fictional city of Los Santos, just like the main story, but on the online servers players can create their own stories.

Some players commit various crimes in order to rise from street thieves to crime lords, while others enjoy the city’s entertainment, such as casinos and exploration. In any case, it is a popular game because of its high degree of freedom.

In “NijiGTA”, a custom server for “GTAV” was created, and a fictional town called “Nijisantos” was prepared that was customized specifically for Nijisanji. In addition to criminals, participating live streamers can take on any role they like, such as restaurant owners, ambulance crew, and police officers.

The server was open for 11 days from June 15th to 25th, 2024, from around 7pm to 3am. The server was very busy every day, with not only Nijisanji livers but also Nijisanji EN livers participating. At one point, as many as 91 livers were living on “Nijisantos” at the same time.

With various incidents constantly occurring in different locations, this project was always full of highlights.

From 6:00pm to 7:00pm, just before the server opened, the organizers, Kanae and Hoshikawa Sara, streamed “Niji GTA News,” a summary of events that had happened on “Niji Santos” the previous day. This news program allowed viewers who could not follow all the streams to get a sense of what had happened the previous day, and also raised expectations for the server that was about to begin.

If you want a quick rundown of what happened in “Niji Santos,” we recommend starting with “Niji GTA News.”

News of the 16th

“Nijisanji GTA” attracted more live streamers than the organizers expected, and became a big topic of conversation. Why did this project, which was first held by Nijisanji, become so popular? I was completely immersed in “Nijisanji” and I’m still not out of the afterglow, so I’d like to introduce the charm and features of “Nijisanji GTA”.

Although the participating streamers role-played each role on “Nijisantos,” they played as themselves, rather than playing completely different characters. The fact that they were able to behave naturally while still being residents of “Nijisantos,” and keeping existing relationships intact, was probably an easy style to accept for both streamers and viewers.

For example, the police and criminals have role-playing of “chasing” and “being chased,” but because the two streamers already know each other, the conversation is bright and has the atmosphere of a collaborative stream between streamers. Viewers also understand the relationship between the streamers, so they can watch the entertainment that is called “funny” with peace of mind.

There is no doubt that one of the reasons why “NijiGTA” became so popular from the beginning was its adoption of a role-playing format that included pre-existing relationship values.

All of the residents of “Nijisanji” are Nijisanji live streamers who specialize in entertainment. Even though there is no pre-written script, whenever they meet, interesting developments always emerge.

Among the participants were some live streamers who don’t usually play games, but they also helped to liven up “Niji GTA” through various projects. For example, Tsukino Mito opened an arena and gathered players to hold a tournament. On the day of the event, live streamers who had bet money on the players they supported surrounded the ring, and the event was a huge success with cheers ringing out.

NijiGTA, where the streamers were always talking somewhere, was a long-term, large-scale collaborative broadcast. It was a great pleasure for fans to see the collaboration and deepening of relationships between streamers in combinations they had never seen before.

In particular, it seemed like a good opportunity for new and recent debutants to get to know their names and personalities. I’m sure there are many viewers who learned about live streamers through “NijiGTA” even though they “know their names but don’t know who they are.”
