This work tells the story of Hojo Tokiyuki, the sole surviving heir to the collapsed Kamakura shogunate, who uses his talent for “hiding” to throw himself into difficult trials and battles in order to retake Kamakura.
In this article, we will provide you with all the information about Suwa Yorishige, the head of Suwa Taisha Shrine! In addition to his strength, we will also explain his character, personality, and relationship with Tokiyuki.
*This article contains major spoilers.
The head of Suwa Taisha Shrine in Shinano Province. He is worshipped by the people as a “living god” who is both a god and a human. He rescues Tokiyuki from the burning of Kamakura, and hides him in Suwa, watching over his growth as he is like a parent to him. He has the special power to see the future, albeit vaguely, through his divine power.
Yorishige, who has a special power called divine power, can see into the future. However, since the vision is fragmentary and vague, it can sometimes seem a bit suspicious. However, he can see more definite futures relatively clearly, and when they first met, he predicted to Tokiyuki, “When you are ten years old… you will become a hero who shakes the heavens.”
Furthermore, the reason he was able to save Tokiyuki from the ruin of Kamakura was because he had foreseen the possibility with his divine power and had made preparations for the eventuality. Yorishige uses his ability to see into the future to give Tokiyuki various trials to help him grow.
It is said that the divine power becomes stronger in places filled with divine energy, and the closer one is to large shrines such as Suwa Taisha, his home base, as well as Tsurugaoka Hachimangu Shrine in Kamakura, the more divine power he is filled with and the clearer the future he can see.
On the other hand, there are rare times when she cannot see the future at all. During these times, she naturally cannot see Tokiyuki’s safe future, so she worries about him more than usual and behaves suspiciously. It seems that the lost divine power can be restored by drinking the water from the sacred stream that flows through Mount Moriya, the sacred object of Suwa Taisha Shrine.
Suwa Myojin is a god of war. Its head, Yorishige, boasts strength worthy of the name “living god.” Not only is his bow accurate, but his form is also very beautiful, and the way he swings his sword exudes a divine presence. There is not a single wasted movement when dodging attacks, and the way he fights with a quiet smile on his face is somehow superhuman, truly godlike.
Yorishige says that if he, as a living god of war, were inferior in martial arts, he would lose his persuasive power and no one would believe in him. Yorishige’s martial arts are not just strong, but are also martial arts that embody his persuasive power as a living god and allow him to gain faith.
Although Yorishige is a “living god,” he is usually a friendly and playful person. He often talks about the future he saw with a strangely high level of excitement, which seems to be the reason why he seems suspicious. He often makes jokes, and Tokiyuki, Shizuku, and the others often give him sharp remarks.
However, that is only his outward appearance, and he is actually very calm and intelligent. He recognizes Tokiyuki’s talent for escaping and uses his skills to lead him to become the ruler of Japan. His abilities are also evident from the fact that he is trusted immensely by the warlords of the Suwajin Party who serve him. His friendly personality and solid abilities have earned him the respect and faith of many.
At first, Tokiyuki was suspicious of Yorishige because of his suspicious nature, but as he got to know him better in Suwa, he began to trust him deeply. Before long, he began to think of Yorishige as a father figure, watching over and raising him. For Tokiyuki, who had lost both his parents and siblings at once, Yorishige was a very reassuring presence.
Yorishige, while respecting Tokiyuki as his lord, also raises him with a parental feeling, loving him (sometimes too much), and watching Tokiyuki’s growth brings Yorishige an irreplaceable joy. To help Tokiyuki grow, he sends him on various trials and dangerous missions, but he is also often worried about him, just like a real parent.
Finally revealing their true identities, the army led by Tokiyuki and Yorishige attacked the Ashikaga forces with unstoppable force, eventually recapturing Kamakura. However, their occupation of Kamakura was short-lived, as the Ashikaga forces soon attacked again, and Tokiyuki’s army was defeated.
In order to allow Tokiyuki to escape, Yorishige takes his remaining soldiers and challenges the Ashikaga forces. Although he manages to kill many Ashikaga soldiers with just a few soldiers, he is unable to win and ends up being surrounded.
Tokiyuki and his men, who were supposed to have fled, rushed to his side. Tokiyuki fled the battlefield, attracting attention, and his retainers took the opportunity to rescue Yorishige. Tokiyuki gave the helpless Yorishige a sword, and had him cut his own hair, which he had never cut before, and the two became father and son.
Yorishige is moved to tears by the fact that his lord has recognized him as a parent and by seeing the children of the “Touwaku-to” grow up to be fine fine men. However, the pursuing Ashikaga army is fast approaching and there is only a little time left.
