— Throughout the TV series broadcast, what kind of reactions have you received from those around you? And what are your thoughts now that it has finished broadcasting?
Director Ichikawa Ryoya (hereinafter referred to as Director Ichikawa): “First of all, I felt relieved. Since this is content that has a large number of experienced fans, I was a little worried about what kind of reaction there would be, but I’m glad that it was well received. This time, in order to differentiate it from other series such as ‘Touken Ranbu – Hanamaru’ and ‘Katsugeki Touken Ranbu’, I also worked on drawing in the finer details.
— “Touken Ranbu Kai – Touken Ranbu: The Close Samurai” (hereafter referred to as “Touken Ranbu” ) is a completely new and original production. Please tell us about the theme of this work and the points you kept in mind when writing the story.
Director Ichikawa: “Of course, I wanted to portray the sword warriors fighting in an appealing way, but the story also has a strong historical element, so I added educational elements such as, ‘So this is the history that took place,’ and ‘So these are the thoughts of the warlords at that time.’
As for the content, since it is a prequel to the anime “Touken Ranbu Kai – Kyoden Moyuru Honnoji-” (hereafter “Kyoden”), I was conscious of making a strong connection so that viewers would understand, “So this is the story that follows this kind of conflict.” If you watch this film and then the TV series, you will understand why he acted and spoke in that way towards Fudou Yukimitsu, and I think the resolution of the characters’ emotions will increase.
–While making this, what parts did you find difficult, and what parts gave you a sense of accomplishment?
Director Ichikawa: “It was difficult to express the subtle nuances of the voice actors’ performances. On stage, emotions such as sadness or anger can be conveyed through the atmosphere, but in anime, you have to use sound and images to express the atmosphere of the emotions the actors are expressing. I struggled with how to convey them as accurately as possible.
逆に手応えを感じたのは、“アニメならでは”の表現ができたこと。特に戦闘シーンですね。“リアル”が舞台の魅力ならば、現実ではできないことを表現できることがアニメの魅力。どちらが上か下かではないですが、アニメの特徴的なところを見せられたと実感しています。
──今回出陣する6振りのチーム感はいかがでしたか？
市川監督：「アニメ『虚伝』では物語を不動が引っ掻き回していたので、そういう意味では「動かしやすさ」はあったかもしれないです。今回の6人はみんな黙々としていて、任務をきちんと遂行してくれる6人でした。
──注目してほしいキャラクターはどの刀剣男士でしょうか。
市川監督：「今回はやはり長谷部ですね。以前の持ち主である黒田官兵衛との関わることになるので、1番心の動くキャラクターなのかなと思います。
山姥切との関係もそうです。不器用なキャラクターだと思ってるので、応援したいという気持ちがあっても、それをどうしても怒ったような感情で表現してしまう。テレビシリーズだと不動に対してそうでしたよね。そういう不器用さの奥に優しさが見えるところが長谷部の魅力だと思っているので、ぜひ注目してほしいです。
──『々伝』の見どころや、演出でこだわられたポイントを教えてください。
市川監督：「先ほど「（歴史の）勉強になる部分を加えた」と言いましたが、こだわった部分もそこになります。豊臣秀吉と官兵衛のやり取りが多いのですが、ただの会話にならないように「どういう経緯があり、なぜこんなことが起こったのか」と具体的な解説も入れて、観客にわかってもらえるような作りにしました。『刀剣乱舞』という作品ももちろんですが、歴史そのものを楽しんでほしいです。
──公開を楽しみにしているファンに向けてのメッセージをお願いします。
市川監督：「散りばめた伏線が多過ぎて、ぜひ続きも描きたいなと思っています。「舞台『刀剣乱舞』虚伝 燃ゆる本能寺」を見ていただくと回収できる部分もあるんですけどね。アニメならではの描写で感じられるものもあると思うので。スタッフ一同、意欲的に取り組んでいますので、応援よろしくお願いします。
