The sequel, Season 2, will finally start on October 6, 2024!
Takumi Fujiwara’s student Natsumi Katagiri, the genius who returned from France Mitsuteru Sawatari, and the young “emperor” of MFG, Michael Beckenbauer… Anticipation is building for how these three and other drivers will battle it out on Lake Ashi.
Animate Times conducted email interviews with the cast! The first person to interview us is Daisuke Ono, who plays Aiba Shun. Now that we are entering the second season, we asked him about his impressions of Aiba Shun, what to look forward to in the future, and the appeal of this series.
–After the first season, have your thoughts or feelings about the character you play, Aiba Shun, changed?
Daisuke Ono (Ono), who plays Aiba Shun: From my perspective, Aiba Shun has always been a “lovable idiot.” That’s why I think he’s called “Aiba” (laughs). He’s always been devoted and straightforward to both the GT-R and No. 7. I’ve always loved him as an actor and as a man.
–What did you keep in mind when recording the 2nd Season? If there were any differences from the 1st Season, please tell us.
Ono: I think that meeting Kanata, who is both his rival and like a younger brother to him, has helped him grow as a person, and his passion for MF Ghost has grown even stronger.
–After performing the role, what do you feel is the appeal of Aiba Shun, and what are some points to look out for in the future?
Ono: I love the line, “Show us the Japanese spirit, GT-R.” His determination to take on the challenge of being the strongest domestic car. His passion for racing. His kindness towards his juniors. He’s a passionate man in every respect. He’s straightforward in both love and racing, and sometimes he can’t make the right turn, but that honesty is also part of his charm.
— Mr. Ono, you yourself drive a car as a member of teamOVER!. At the end of the first season, Shun Aiba said that he wanted to steal the secret of Kanata’s speed, but if you could learn some driving techniques from any of the characters in MF Ghost, who would it be and what would you want to learn from?
Ono: I learned a lot from the V-shaped cornering that was unique to four-wheel drive vehicles, which was mentioned in the movie. Out-in-out is the basic approach, but depending on the machine, that isn’t the absolute correct answer. I actually drove the course in the GT-R by sound director Mima, and I was surprised by the otherworldly acceleration and extraordinary stability. I think Aiba trusts this car and entrusts himself to it. I would like to learn Aiba’s driving techniques so that I can become closer to the GT-R.
— As a car lover who is also thinking about customizing his own cars, what do you think is the appeal of this work? Also, please tell us if there are any new charms you have found in your roles so far.
Ono: Personally, I’m a big fan of BLITZ. In fact, I had my car tuned by BLITZ. I installed the ZZ-R damper and throttle control, and also asked them to do height-adjustable suspension and alignment. It’s the best. Everything about the MF Ghost races is so real. Racers are actually racing cars like this. The mechanics are really pushing themselves to this level. You can really feel that. That’s what makes it so exciting.
–What scenes would you personally like people to pay attention to before the broadcast and what message would you like to give to the fans who are looking forward to the broadcast?
小野：前期のラスト。ここで終わるのかよ！ ここからだろ！ この続きを早くみせやがれ！ 皆さんそう思ったことでしょう。かく言う僕もそうでした。第2期も最初からアクセル全開、あれもこれも見どころしかありません。一緒に内燃機関を燃やしましょう！
