“Mononoke” has been loved by many since it was first broadcast in 2006 as the anthology “Bakeneko”, a part of the “Ayakashi” series, and then as a TV anime series in 2007. It depicts the adventures of a mysterious medicine seller who wields a “demon-slaying sword”, the only sword in the world that can cut and exorcise Mononoke, and which suddenly appears when people are attacked by the “mystery” caused by Mononoke.
“Mononoke Karakasa” is a rebirth of “Mononoke” as a theatrical version set in the inner palace. A completely new theatrical film with a star-studded cast and staff gathered under the direction of director Kenji Nakamura, the creator of the series, a heartbreaking yet powerful story of “salvation” that shakes the soul is born.
The latest video, “Special Trailer – Front Volume,” which has just been released, is a stark contrast to the special trailer and main trailer, which were notable for the screams and expressions of anguish of the maids. It starts with a cheerful narration by Sakashita (voiced by Hosomi Daisuke), the Hiroshikiban of the “Seven Entrances” of the Ooku. The video introduces the male characters at a light-hearted pace, and for the first time, you can hear the voices of the star-studded cast, including Kaji Yuki, Fukuyama Jun, Hosomi Daisuke, Irino Miyu, and Tsuda Kenjiro.
The video also reveals the roles of the “Ooku,” the bureaucratic organization where the maids work, and the “Omote,” where the men conduct politics, as well as details of the “Nanatsuguchi,” the gateway that connects the Ooku to the outside world. There are plenty of stunning art cuts, including the Nanatsuguchi, which features pop art such as large raccoon dogs and daruma dolls, the gorgeous door leading to the Ooku, and a mysterious underground altar filled with a large amount of water.
In addition, the story also talks about the existence of a festival that is central to the story, and the mysterious ritual that the maids perform every day. The Ooku is bustling with preparations for a big festival called “Omochihiki,” which is held to pray for the safe delivery of a child born to the Tenshi (voiced by Miyu Irino), the symbol of the shogunate and the highest-ranking Emperor, and his wife.
The O-mochi-hiki, an important duty for the ladies-in-waiting of the Ooku, was supposed to take place two months ago, but was postponed, and Saburomaru (CV: Kaji Yuki) and Hiraki (CV: Fukuyama Jun) were sent from the “front” to investigate. There was also information that a certain maid had disappeared around the same time as the postponement, and Saburomaru’s suspicions about Utayama, the head of the Ooku, deepened.
In order to receive the protection of the “Omizu-sama” worshipped in the Ooku, the maids perform a ritual every day to drink water drawn from a well. The presence of Hokuto Mizorogi (voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda), a man who is the priest of the “Omizu-sama” faith, is also of interest.
So why was the O-mochi-hiki postponed? And who was the missing maid? As the mystery deepens, expectations for the main story grow as we wonder how the unique male characters will become involved in the story.
The completely new film, “Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa,” set in the Ooku area of the anime “Mononoke,” will be released on July 26, 2024.
