Today, August 26th (Monday), is Andre’s birthday, and August 29th (Thursday) is “Rose of Versailles Day,” commemorating the first performance of “The Rose of Versailles” at the Takarazuka Grand Theater in 1974.
To capture the celebratory mood of this film, new stills have been released of one of the main characters, Andre Grandier.
▲New stills from Andre Grandier
Andre Grandier is a servant and childhood friend of Oscar François de Jarjayes, the youngest daughter of the distinguished and noble Jarjayes family, who was raised as the heir.
He grew up with Oscar almost like a brother, always staying close to her throughout her life, and despite being at the mercy of the times, he lived out his destiny beautifully.
Andre’s way of life, along with Oscar, has garnered enthusiastic support from fans of the original work, and he is an extremely popular character, with Takarazuka Revue having performed him in the leading role for many years in productions such as “Andre and Oscar Edition” and “Andre Edition.”
The four stills released this time show Andre struggling to survive in France from his childhood through to the revolutionary period.
After his mother died, he was raised by his only living parent, his grandmother Marron Glacé, and even though he was a commoner, Oscar had always expected him to be friends with her as an equal since childhood, which resulted in him being scolded by his grandmother. After such a childhood, he supports Oscar, who at a young age serves as the captain of the French Guard and protects Marie Antoinette, as a servant and a good understanding person, and they do their best to survive the turbulent times of the French Revolution.
The voice of Andre is provided by popular voice actor Toyonaga Toshiyuki, who has appeared in popular works such as the role of Pop in “Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai” and the role of Katsuki Yuuri in “Yuri!!! on Ice.”
Regarding his role, Toyonaga commented, ” I never thought that the day would come when I would be in such a historic, legendary work as
The Rose of Versailles , and especially that I would get to play the role of Andre. I am truly happy to be involved in such a work that will be loved throughout history. “
Furthermore, Toyonaga, who is active not only as a voice actor but also as an actor and singer, said, ” I also sing the songs. I act out all kinds of scenes from the original work…The Rose of Versailles is portrayed as aesthetic, intelligent, and ephemeral, with modern visuals. “
