A popular work affectionately known as “Cherry Magic,” the TV anime that aired from January to March 2024 also received a great response. The anime carefully depicts the feelings of Adachi and Kurosawa as they overlap one by one, and the skillful direction while respecting the worldview of the original work has also been a hot topic. A special event for this anime, “Cherry Magic Summer Festival,” was held at Theater 1010 on Sunday, August 18, 2024.
At this event, Kobayashi Chiaki, who plays Adachi Kiyoshi, Suzuki Ryota, who plays Kurosawa Yuichi, Sato Gen, who plays Wataya Minato, and Shirai Yusuke, who plays Rokkaku Yuta, appeared on stage. As the voices of Adachi, Kurosawa, Minato, and Rokkaku began to be heard and the audience’s anticipation grew, Adachi shouted out the signal, “Cherry Magic Summer Fest start!” and the four of them shouted in unison, and the long-awaited event began!
Kobayashi Chiaki, who plays Adachi Kiyoshi, Suzuki Ryota, who plays Kurosawa Yuichi, Sato Gen, who plays Wataya Minato, and Shirai Yusuke, who plays Rokkaku Yuta, appeared on stage.
Starting with Kobayashi, they each greeted the audience, talking about how it had been a long time since they last stood on stage in front of their fans, and also giving their thoughts to Furukawa Makoto, who plays Tsuge Masato, who was unable to make the stage that day.
The first corner is the “Cherry Magic Playback Best Kyun Award.” We will start by looking back at the first half of the anime, from episodes 1 to 6. We will introduce the favorite “Kyun scenes” chosen by viewers, cast, and staff.
In episode 1, Adachi overhears Kurosawa’s inner thoughts in the office elevator and realizes that Kurosawa has feelings for her.
Original author Toyoda Yu commented, “The contrast between Adachi’s sluggish movements and Kurosawa’s sparkling presence is overflowing from the screen and his voice and is very memorable.”
Regarding the barrage of lines in which Kurosawa’s inner thoughts are revealed, Suzuki began by saying, “It was really tough,” and revealed a surprising episode, saying that because the amount of lines in the script wasn’t enough, “I had to ad-lib my own lines.”
Furthermore, when asked if Suzuki had to create Kurosawa’s emotions, he replied, “Yes,” and added, “Because I’m playing the role of Kurosawa!” The powerful words of Suzuki, who plays Kurosawa, resonated throughout the room.
Regarding the second episode, some people commented that Kurosawa might be being “flirtatious” around this point, but Suzuki responded with a laugh, saying “Flirty?! Yes, he is,”
The topic of conversation turned to the scene on the rooftop during a company drinking party where Adachi and Kurosawa grow closer, with Kobayashi using the powerful phrase “Kurosawa’s manly side”! Suzuki agreed, saying that Kurosawa has a strong, pushy side but also a side where he cares too much, and that contrast makes him a great guy, talking about the appeal of Kurosawa’s manliness.
Then, in episode 3, there was an excitement over the sauna scene where a special setting for Adachi’s magic was revealed – “strong inner voices are transmitted by steam”, and then Suzuki introduced her favorite heart-warming scene.
Suzuki-san chose the scene on the way back from the sauna. He said that he was touched by the way Adachi was casually being kind to the child. He said that it was good that the scene was not “a scene between Adachi and Kurosawa” but that the love was with “Adachi”, and Suzuki-san’s unwavering statement that “it’s from Kurosawa’s point of view” was typical of the actor who plays Kurosawa.
Shirai’s pick for the most heart-warming scene is from episode 4. On the day that Kurosawa devotedly nursed Adachi back to health, Adachi was deeply moved by Kurosawa’s sincere feelings. Suzuki acted out Kurosawa’s inner voice saying, “I will absolutely, absolutely cherish all of Adachi’s first times,” which drew thunderous applause from the audience.
Next, we look at the scene in episode 5 where Kurosawa confesses his love to Adachi. This is the most heart-fluttering scene between Director Yoshiko Okuda and Sato. The director commented, “Kurosawa’s trembling voice made my heart ache. I was moved to tears by the final ending song (Magical Love (Kurosawa solo piano version)).” Sato was overflowing with emotion and said, “I can’t stop feeling the heart fluttering!” as she spoke passionately about how the scene conveyed both Kurosawa’s inner voice and what was actually overflowing from his heart.
Regarding the acting in this confession scene, Suzuki revealed the background to the recording, saying that, although it was simply difficult, the order in which the lines and the inner thoughts were recorded was separated, which allowed him to sort out what Kurosawa was thinking as he confessed.
In episode 6, Kobayashi-san’s favorite heart-pounding scene was the confession scene from Adachi to Kurosawa. Kobayashi-san said that in a normal romantic comedy, this would happen towards the end, but she was thrilled that it happened in the middle of the story. She also delves deeper into the scene where they talk over the phone for the first time after they start dating.
付き合う瞬間は実感がわかないけど、付き合ったあとに「おやすみ」「また明日ね」など電話で話したりすると実感が伴ってくると語る小林さんの隣で、「言葉にして紐解かれるとニヤニヤしちゃう」と言いながら鈴木さんも同意。
電話だと心が読めない。ラブコメでは当たり前の、相手の考えていることが分からないという状況が初めて第6話で描かれるといった話にも熱が入ります。相手の心が読めるという前提があったけど付き合って初めて読めない状況に「これいいですね〜」と小林さんが唸る場面も。客席の皆さんも一連の話に共感し会場全体の気持ちがひとつとなっていました。
また、音響監督を務めた宮村優子さん、藤崎 希役の小清水亜美さんからベストキュンシーンについて長めのコメントが寄せられたのですが、要約すると「キュンとするシーンが多すぎて選べない！」とのこと。さすが『チェリまほ』を愛するおふたりの圧倒的熱量が伝わる一幕となりました！
続いてのコーナーは「魔法使いになって心の声を読んでみよう選手権」。豊田先生による貴重な描き下ろし「とあるシチュエーションのイラスト」を見てキャラクター（昼の部のイラストでは黒沢）の心の声を予想し、豊田先生が提示した正解と一番近い人が本日の「最高の魔法使い」に選ばれるという企画。
公開されたイラストには、洗濯物を干す安達を後ろから見つめる黒沢が何やら衝撃を受けている様子が。キャスト陣は安達が干そうと手にしているパンツに大注目していましたが、正解は「絵画【洗濯物を干す天使】……⁉」でした！
一番自信がありそうだった鈴木さんは見事に不正解。何をしていても安達は可愛いと感じている黒沢の真髄を理解していた佐藤さんが「最高の魔法使い」として称えられました。
再び「チェリまほプレイバック・ベストキュンアワード」のコーナーへと戻り、後半の第7話〜最終話（第12話）のシーンを振り返っていきます。
第7話、黒沢が安達との初デート中に心の中で歌っていた黒沢優一作詞作曲「デート」についての話題も大盛り上がり。鈴木さんからは、アフレコでついでに録ったわけではなく「デート」だけでレコーディングスタジオに行って録ったという裏話も。
そして第8話では、会社の資料室で安達が心を読めることを黒沢に打ち明けており、会場ではその後のキスシーンの映像が流れました。会場ならではの音響で皆が見守るなか、黒沢が安達の耳に触れながら「もっと触れたい」と思っている瞬間の場面で、鈴木さんから突然「耳、良いよね…」と心の声が漏れてしまった一幕も。
奥田監督と小林さんはこちらのキスシーンをベストキュンシーンとして選んだそう。監督からは「視聴者の方々に満足してもらえるようにたっぷり尺をとってみたら、結構恥ずかしいくらい長かったですね」といったコメントが寄せられています。
息遣いがどれくらい使われているのか、どのくらいクリアに聴こえるのか、アフレコの際には分からなかったと言う小林さんは、「劇場で聴いてもそうですけど、スゴイね！ 息がしっかり聴こえるんだ」と嬉しそうな様子。
さらに「無音がいいのよね」と鈴木さん。そしてオフィスでの壁ドンされる側とする側を体の動きで表現してくれた小林さんは、キスシーンの話題を通して「ちょっとね体温（気温）が上がったんじゃないですか」と朗らかな笑顔を見せていました。
第9話は安達に長崎への転勤の話が舞い込み、黒沢と離れてしまう安達の不安、黒沢が安達に感情をぶつけるシーンを振り返ったあと、湊と六角が仲直りするシーンも話題となり柘植の優しさや人間らしさにも触れました。
第10話に関して、佐藤さんは夢追い人である湊と、ある程度夢をかなえている柘植の関係性について語ります。
さらに柘植がバイクで湊をオーディション会場まで送り届けるシーンをベストキュンシーンとして選んだ柘植役の古川さんからは、「凄まじい行動力。ピンチに駆けつけるヒーローのごとく。単純にかっこいいですよね。」とコメントが届きました。
続いて第11話、白井さんがベストキュンシーンとして選んだ柘植から湊への告白。夢を追うことを諦めるなと言っていた柘植に、今回は湊の方が「諦めが早すぎんだろ」と返すところがエモいと白井さん。
佐藤さんは、柘植と湊は追いかける夢が違っても想いや信念は一緒だったんだなというところが素敵だと、柘植と湊への思いを噛み締めていました。
最終話、安達と黒沢のプロポーズシーンの映像を会場の皆で見守り、プレイバックのコーナー全12話を駆け抜けた総括として4人のキャストが順に思いを述べました。
今回いちからアニメを見直したという白井さん。オーディションの際に「この作品は登場人物たちの成長物語を描いたヒューマンドラマ（物語）です」といった説明が書かれており、改めて本当にそうだなと胸にくるものがあると話しました。佐藤さんは夢を追いかける湊に共感したり考えさせられることもあり、自身のことも振り返る機会となったそう。
鈴木さんはどれだけ完璧に見える人でも欠点や苦手なことがあるので、魔法という良いスパイスがあるなかで人間のリアルが描かれていて共感もできる素晴らしい作品であると語り、黒沢に向けて「おめでとう」とお祝いの言葉も。
小林さんは原作漫画や実写ドラマでの話題性があったなかでのアニメ化だったので、アニメならではの魅力を引き出せたらと制作陣一丸となって取り組み、多くの方に愛される作品になって本当に嬉しいし良かったと締めました。
