Animate Times is running a series of interviews looking back on the anime broadcast! This time, we asked character designer Shota Shinkai about his impressions when he read the original manga and what he paid attention to when designing.
–What was your first impression when you read the original work and what you found interesting about it?
Character designer Shoto Shinkai (hereafter, Shinkai): My first impression was that the drawings were just so cute! The expressions of every character in every frame were so good that I took my time looking at them. And the relationship between the three characters changes little by little, which makes it feel more human, and it’s really interesting. As I read on, I was moved by the relationship between the three characters, which sometimes becomes unstable but then gradually stabilizes, and I grew to like them more and more.
–Please tell us what you kept in mind and what you paid particular attention to when turning Pom-sensei’s drawings into character designs for the anime.
Shinkai: The overall details were based on the simple and cute illustrations in the film, and I adjusted the proportions and other details to be slightly closer to the neat and pretty illustrations.
-When designing the characters, did Pom-sensei give you any requests?
Shinkai: Pom-sensei didn’t give me any requests in advance, so I was able to design freely.
–Which character was the most difficult to design for this game?
Shinkai: All the characters, including the three main ones, are wonderful, so it was difficult to bring out the charm of Pom-sensei’s characters. If I had to say, it’s a matter of personal strengths and weaknesses, but I’m not good at balancing the face of a character with round, chunky eyes like Saki, so it was difficult.
–How have you felt seeing and hearing the reactions since the anime began? Please tell us your honest thoughts.
Shinkai: It’s a work that deals with difficult themes, but everyone is genuinely enjoying it, and that’s my honest impression. And above all, I feel that “Senpai wa Otoko no Ko” is a warm work that is truly loved by fans.
–Makoto is a boy who is troubled by his own feelings that may be different and abnormal from other people’s. What do you think “normal” means, Mr. Shinkai?
新海：質問の括りが広くて難しいですが、好きなことに対してと定義して答えるなら、自分の感情に疑問を抱かず、好きな物を好きと思える状態が普通だと思います。
普通でなくするのは、他者と比べて劣っていたり、違っていたりすることがきっかけになると思いますので、私も絵を描くことが好きですが、人と比べて自信がなくなったり、好きではないのかもしれないと思ってしまうことがあります。みなさんが好きなことを普通に好きと思える世の中になったらいいなと思います。
――今後もアニメを楽しみにしている読者のみなさまに、見どころなどを含めたメッセージをお願いします。
新海：「先輩はおとこのこ」、ここまでのご視聴ありがとうございます。これから物語は佳境に入っていき、まこと、咲、竜二の３人はそれぞれ違った悩みにぶつかります。見ていてこっちまで胸が苦しくなることもありますが、どのようにその壁を乗り越えていくのか、ぜひ最後まで見届けてほしいです！
