The first completely new movie in the series, “Overlord: Holy Kingdom Arc,” will be released nationwide on September 20, 2024.
To commemorate the completion of the movie, a “final screening” was held on August 18th. The main cast members, including Hino Satoshi (Ainz), Hara Yumi (Albedo), Kato Masayuki (Demiurge), Aoyama Yoshino (Neia Baraja), Nabatame Hitomi (Remedios Custodio), and Seto Asami (Shizu Delta), took to the stage.
Here we present the official report of the event.
Before the screening, Hino stood in front of the packed audience and said, “The Overlord anime series often keeps people waiting, so I’m sure you’re all used to waiting, but still, I’m very happy that we can finally deliver it to you.”
Hara continued, “Ever since I heard that a movie was going to be made, there was the broadcast of the fourth season and recording of the game, and I’ve also been watching the current reruns, so somehow my enthusiasm for Overlord has been building up ever since.” Kato also lamented, “Until now, I’ve been unable to say the names of the three of them (Aoyama, Namatame, Seto) even in promotions because it would be a spoiler, and today I thought I would be able to say them without any reservations, but since no one has seen it yet, in the end I can’t say anything today either,” drawing laughter from the audience.
Continuing on from that, Seto revealed, “Shizu has appeared (in the series) up until now, but in this movie she talks a lot and is very involved with Neia,” which caused the audience to erupt in excitement.
Aoyama and Namatame are joining the series for the first time with this movie. Both of their characters, Neia and Remedios, had many battle scenes and many scenes in which they struggled both physically and mentally, so they both comforted each other, saying, “It must have been really tough.” Aoyama also reflected, “During the recording, water and lozenges were naturally placed around us, and we were surrounded by the love of our co-stars.”
Namatame-san couldn’t hide her surprise at the public’s reaction to her role as Remedios, who is bound by loyalty to the Holy Princess and has a strong sense of discrimination against demi-humans and the Undead. “I was happy when I passed the audition, but at the same time, I was hated so much that I decided that if it came to this, I would win if I was hated (as a character),” she said. Aoyama commented, “I felt an incredible amount of power from him,” and Hino praised her, saying, “He was incredibly powerful.”
Kato, who is a fan of the original work, also praised Namatame’s acting, saying, “I also hated Remedios in the original work, but after seeing her acted out in the anime, my impression of her changed considerably.”
How do the cast members interpret their roles? Hino-san’s character Ainz is an interesting character because of the balance between him and the personality of Suzuki Satoru before he was transported to the other world. He goes on to say, “As the story progresses, there are parts of Suzuki Satoru that are gradually encroached upon by Ainz, so I’m careful to get the balance right with each new season.”
Albedo is characterized by the range of emotions between her sharp side as the head of the guardians of Nazarick and her lewd side in front of her beloved Ainz, so Hara said, “I’m doing my best to portray that range.” Kato, who plays Demiurge, who is loyal to Ainz but has a cruel side deep inside, said that she has been focusing on how to convey the “cruelty” inside him in her lines, and talked about the highlights of the movie, saying, “There’s a scene at the beginning of the movie where I think the lines I say are like one of my goals, or that I’ve reached that cruelty, so I hope you’ll listen to it.”
Aoyama, who describes her character Neia as not having any outstanding talent, but as someone with a gloomy inferiority complex, said, “I tried to convey the feeling of living with all these upside-down feelings, like not wanting to lose but losing, or wanting to start her engine but not being able to, during the voice recording.” She then hinted at the contents of the movie, saying that an encounter with “a certain person” will change her.
Nabatame reflected, “She has her own sense of justice, so I would be happy if people could see that.” However, during the break, she confessed that there were times when she found it difficult to play the role of Remedios, who is the complete opposite of Neia. Hino pointed out to Nabatame, “Although the two of you seem to be contrasting, I think that actually (at your core) you are the same,” and Nabatame seemed to understand.
魔導国の君主らしい、その鋭い指摘に、周囲からも「さすがです！」「すばらしい！」と感嘆した声がわき起こった。これまで寡黙だったシズも、本作では多くのセリフを発することになる。「アフレコでは、テンポを一定に、できるだけ声帯の開きを一定にして、心揺さぶられないように気を付けました」という瀬戸さん。これまでにないシズの姿は、とても可愛いと評判とのことで、そんな姿を見どころとして明かした。
そして最後に、本作は至高の劇場版である、と語る日野さんは、本作の見どころについて「作品内にはいろいろな形で、何かに心酔することで得られる強さ、脆さがキャラクターを通じて描かれています」と語りかけた。
