This work focuses on the events that took place behind the scenes of the Honnoji Incident depicted in the anime “Kyoden,” and also depicts the relationship between Heshikiri Hasebe and Yamabagiri Kunihiro as they compete for a personal attendant.
In this article, we bring you an interview with Tarusuke Araki, who plays Hasebe Heshikiri. We talked in detail about the previous anime “Kyoden”, the feelings Hasebe has in this work, and the memorable scene with “Yamabagiri Kunihiro” played by Tomoaki Maeno.
-Firstly, please tell us how you felt when it was decided that “Touken Ranbu Kai – The Legend of the Close Samurai” would be screened in theaters.
Tarusuke Araki, who plays Hasebe Heshikiri (hereafter, Araki): I heard that it would be released in theaters much later. I had heard that they were going to record an original story, which was a prequel to the anime “Touken Ranbu Kai – Kyoden Moyuru Honnoji-” and was a story related to the part of Hasebe that I play, so I was honestly happy that they dug deeper into it.
The visuals were incredibly beautiful, and I was excited to be able to watch it on the big screen in the theater.
–Please tell us your impressions when you read the “Den” script.
Aragaki: In the anime “Kyoden,” there is a part where Yamabagiri Kunihiro’s past is depicted along with a flashback scene, and even just from that scene, I was able to act with a pretty good sense of satisfaction, thinking, “(Yamabagiri) made a mistake and is regretting it.” In “Jinden,” by digging deeper into that part, the resolution of Yamabagiri’s own feelings and those of Hasebe and the others who are by his side became clearer. I think if you watch “Jinden” and then watch the anime “Kyoden,” you’ll get a different impression of the story.
–In the anime “Touken Ranbu Kai – Kyoden: Moyuru Honnoji,” there were many scenes in which Heshikiri Hasebe’s heart was disturbed. What are your thoughts looking back on them?
Arakaki: I think Hasebe was often upset by the behavior of “Fudo Yukimitsu” (Oda Nobunaga’s former sword). He had some lingering resentment towards (his former master) Oda Nobunaga. It was certainly an emotion that he could not wipe away, and he was frustrated by being forced into a situation where he had no choice but to express his feelings.
So, I remember that I was acting as if I was showing irritation in response to Fudo’s behavior, rather than any feelings towards Nobunaga. Looking back on it from Hasebe’s perspective, it was the kind of situation that really made me want to say, “It’s Fudo’s fault!” (laughs).
–That’s certainly true. It was a very tense atmosphere.
Aragaki: Yes (laughs). Throughout the film, Fudo really stirred things up, and it felt like everything that had been sunk deep in (Hasebe’s) heart was suddenly lifted up into the air.
–You mentioned acting, but what do you usually think about when playing the role of the sword warrior “Heshikiri Hasebe”?
Aragaki: When I play Hasebe, I want to pay close attention to his background and the story that the sword carries. Although it was treasured by Nobunaga, he felt that “Nobunaga had given up on me” when it was handed over to a vassal who was not his direct vassal. This remains as the “resentment toward Nobunaga” that I mentioned earlier, but at the same time, I feel that it also remains as a regret of “(Hasebe’s) own lack of ability.”
なので、今度の主人（審神者）には、もっと自分が成長し忠誠を尽くそうという気持ちを強く根底に持っている刀剣男士なんです。しかし、アニメ「虚伝」や今作では、前の主人のところに向かう状況になります。その時に、抱えている過去の傷と現在の主人から（近侍として）任せられた任務を果たすという使命感で、板挟みになってしまう。
気持ちが強いのは絶対に今の主人の方で、前の主人に感情が揺さぶられつつも、「常に芯がぶれない」という彼の性格が結果として今のお芝居に繋がっています。
今回の場合は、（芝居の方向性として）気をつけて臨んだというよりも、脚本に身を任せて演じてみようと考えたのが始まりでした。大前提である、キャラクターとしての在り方はぶらさずに、その状態でこの物語の中に飛び込んでみた、という感覚です。
――ご自身がへし切長谷部と似ていると思う部分や、または「すごいな」と思う部分を教えてください。
新垣：自分のことをよく分かっていないので、似ている部分はあまり分からないです（笑）。「すごいな」と思う部分は諦めないところですね。彼はすごく不器用で、相手に伝える言葉が足りないし、自分の中で感情に流されずに冷静に考えて言語化する人なのですが、このお話を通してずっと山姥切に対して想いをかけ続けているんですよね。
ともすれば（長谷部が）本来、一番望む形である主人のために任務を絶対に果たすことを優先するならば、山姥切を切り捨てた方が効率が良いのかもしれない。しかし、切り捨てることはせずに、諦めずにずっと関わり続けているところはカッコいいなと思いました。
――たしかにそうですね。そういえば、ご自身のSNSでへし切長谷部のグッズのお写真を投稿されていましたよね。
新垣：このことを投稿で書いたかどうか定かではありませんが、あのグッズの写真を投稿した際に、実はとある刀剣男士の声優さんと収録終わりに居酒屋に行っていて（笑）。
飲んでいた時に、いただいた長谷部のグッズを僕もちょうど持っていたので、「これ、持っているんだよ！」と見せて、そして写真を撮ってSNSに投稿した流れだったと思います（笑）。その投稿に対する反響がとても大きくて、「こんなにみなさんに喜んでいただけるんだ」と自分でもびっくりしました。
――そんな裏話があったんですね！ 先ほど、新垣さんとへし切長谷部の似ている部分を伺っていたのですが、新垣さんが現場で収録する中で、演じている刀剣男士と本人が似ているなと思う方はいらっしゃいますか？
新垣：三日月さんと鳥海（浩輔）さんは、この座組の中での存在が似ているというか……（笑）。やっぱり、（鳥海さんは）大先輩という感じがしていて。
三日月自体には、言葉にはしないけれど全てを見通している印象を持っています。「あえて言わないだけで、色々知っているんだろうな」って。このお話でも、審神者と親しげに話していて……顕現したばかりだというのに（笑）。ちょっと異質な存在のような気がするんです。
――本当に俯瞰しすぎているというか。
新垣：そうですね。鳥海さんも三日月のように、すごく俯瞰してものを見ているんだろうなと感じる時があります。
例えば、僕らが何かしら粗相をして、「止めたほうがいいぞ」と鳥海さんは内心で思っていたりするんだろうけれど、そんな場面でもいつもニコニコしてくれているんです。僕らに足りないところがあっても、後で「こうしたほうが良いよ」って優しくコソッとアドバイスしてくださって、本当に見えないところで助けてくれるんです。だから、本当に三日月役にぴったりな方だなと思いますね。
