Animate Times is running a series of interviews looking back on the broadcast of the anime! Until now, we have been running a series on cast members, but starting with this one, we will also be talking to staff members. This time, we asked sound director Satoshi Motoyama about what he was conscious of during the recording of this work, and his impressions of the acting of Shuuichirou Umeda, Akiyoshi Sekine, and Yuuma Uchida.
–What was your first impression when you read the original work and what you found interesting about it?
Sound Director Satoshi Motoyama (hereafter, Motoyama): My first impression was that the illustrations were cute. What I found interesting was that while the characters’ changing emotions were well-illustrated, even the parts where serious situations were depicted had a good atmosphere, and the story didn’t feel too heavy, making it very easy to read.
–As the sound director, what were the things you were conscious of and paid particular attention to while recording this work?
Motoyama: This is a work that frequently switches between expressive emotional parts and comical parts, so I was conscious of creating it so that the built-up emotions are not cut off by the comical scenes, and that it would also make people chuckle.
— Umeda-san, who plays Makoto, said that he was worried about the pitch of his voice while acting. Please tell us your impression of Umeda-san’s acting and what kind of direction he gave to her.
Motoyama: Because the character is thought to be female until it is revealed that he is male, I think the voice key and acting are quite difficult, but I think Umeda-san has managed to strike a very good balance. It was also in the lines during the audition, but I think the most notable part is how natural it feels when he says “I”. In terms of direction, I thought of Makoto himself as an ordinary high school student, so I was careful not to make him seem too special.
–Please tell us your impressions of Sekine’s acting as Saki, who is expressive but also has a delicate side, and what kind of direction you gave to her.
Motoyama: I think Sekine-san’s Saki has a much more expressive acting style than I expected. Thanks to that, I feel that the contrast with the delicate parts of her character helps her to express her personality even more. In terms of direction, I was concerned about whether her acting as a cute junior would sound, without her constantly changing moods giving a negative impression.
――まことを好きになったことに悩む竜二を演じる内田さんのお芝居の印象や、どのようなディレクションをされたのか教えてください。
本山：内田さんは、竜二のかっこよさと恋するかわいさ的な部分をとても魅力的に演じてくれているな、と思っております。ディレクションとしては素直になりきれない、気持ちを誤魔化している部分についての加減を気にしていました。
――まことは他の人とは違う、普通じゃないかもしれない自分の感覚に悩む少年です。本山さんは“普通”とはどういうことを指すと思いますか？
本山：難しいですが、この作品内ではカテゴリー分けできる、ということではないかと思います。「かっこいいものが好き、かつ男性」「かわいいものが好き、かつ女性」のどちらかに当てはまることが“普通”、なのかなと。なので、「生物学的に男性」「生物学的に女性」という分け方や、「かっこいいものが好き」「かわいいものが好き」という区分けであれば、まことも“普通”に該当するかと思います。
――今後もアニメを楽しみにしている方々に、見どころなど含めたメッセージをお願いします。
本山：今後は、それぞれのキャラクターの心情にスポットが当たっていきます。それぞれの悩みに対し、どう対応していくかを楽しみにしていただければと思います。また、心情に合う曲を作っていただいているので、そちらも楽しみに聞いていただけたらと思っております。
