The latest information on “Garden of Remembrance” was released at a panel hosted by Avex Pictures at the “Anime Expo 2024” event currently being held in Los Angeles, USA, from 7:30 p.m. local time on Friday, July 5th (11:30 a.m. Japan time on Saturday, July 6th).
The main film was shown for the first time only to attendees during the panel, and the long-awaited main visual was also unveiled after the screening. Director Naoko Yamada also provided a video comment saying, “I made this film with great care and love, wanting to convey the feelings of longing for a loved one, small wishes, and memories of holding hands so that they would not be interrupted. “
This work won the Special Excellence Award and Audience Award at the Bucheon International Animation Film Festival held in October last year, and also had a special screening at the Annecy International Film Festival, attracting attention from both within Japan and overseas. When the main feature was shown for the first time and the long-awaited new information was released, the audience applauded enthusiastically due to its high level of completion. “Garden of Remembrance” is an original work by director Yamada Naoko, a heartwarming gem of an animation short that vividly depicts the fluctuating emotions of three characters – “you,” “me,” and a “childhood friend” – on the theme of anemone flowers.
The animation will be produced by Science SARU, who previously teamed up with the TV anime “The Tale of the Heike” and the film “The Color of You.” The original character designs will be by manga artist Etsuko Mizusawa (who is also responsible for the illustrations of the manga “Hana no Zuboraya” and others), and the music will be written by singer-songwriter Lovely Summer-chan, who performs as a “cute and cool, lively rock gal.”
Naoko Yamada made her directorial debut in 2009 with the TV anime “K-ON!”, and her 2016 film “A Silent Voice” was included in the top 10 box office grossing Japanese films of the year and won numerous other prestigious awards, including the Best Animation Film Award at the 40th Japan Academy Prize. She is an up-and-coming director who continues to attract attention both inside and outside the industry, having been selected for the Feature Film Competition at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival and winning the Golden Goblet Award for Best Animation Film at the 26th Shanghai International Film Festival for her film “The Color of You,” which was released on August 30th.
