Ike, the strongest magician in the Demon King’s army, is engaged in fierce battles with humans, but he’s actually a “human pretending to be a demon”!? What is the meaning and purpose of him disguising himself as a demon and fighting in the Demon King’s army?
To commemorate the anime adaptation, we spoke to Fukuyama Jun, who plays the main character Ike, and Tachibana Hina, who plays Ike’s maid Sati, about the highlights of the series and behind-the-scenes stories from the recording sessions.
–After reading the original novel and comics, and having performed in the play, what are your impressions and what appeals do you feel about the work?
Fukuyama Jun, who plays Ike (hereinafter referred to as Fukuyama): The Demon King’s army is fighting against humans, but Ike, who is at the center of the Demon King’s army, is not a demon, but is actually a human who disguises himself as a demon. That’s interesting.
Even within the Demon King’s army, each has their own intentions and power balance, and it’s actually a complicated story, but it’s portrayed lightly, easily understood, and mildly. When depicting justice, you can feel a sense of catharsis in the process of defeating a huge force, but for example, even if (the protagonist) was on the side of justice, in the next series the enemy is portrayed as the side of justice, like a revenge, and you start to think that not everything on the side of justice is right. Humans are complex, and I think it’s difficult to simply divide them into good and evil, but I thought it was good that by replacing them with humans and the Demon King’s army, the relationships and feelings of the characters became easier to understand.
Also, while the human army is overwhelmingly larger in numbers, I find it interesting that the Demon King’s army is at a disadvantage because each member has their own unique strength as a life form and they don’t focus on tactics.
Tachibana Hina, who plays Sati (hereinafter, Tachibana): I also thought it was unusual to be told from the perspective of the Demon King’s army, as humans are often portrayed as the righteous ones. I was very interested in why Ike is on the Demon King’s side and what his goals are.
Also, within the serious story, there are many comedy elements and a harem element, and all the cute girls love Lord Ike. There were some parts that seemed difficult, like the difference between white magic and black magic, but they were easy to understand and I was able to enjoy acting.
–Please tell us your impression of the character you play and what you find appealing about it.
Fukuyama: Ike is completely elusive. He’s human, but he was raised by the demon Ronberg and inherited his abilities, but the setting gives him a sense of personality, and I get the impression that readers and viewers gradually shape his character as a human through his encounters with Sati and his interactions with the army commander, Cephiro.
Also, as a human in the Demon King’s army, he wishes for coexistence between humans and demons, but he has never lived in human society. Growing up in demon society meant he was at risk of being killed if people found out he was human, but I think that allowed him to grow up pure and uninvolved in the complex tactics, schemes, and hatred of human society.
Tachibana: When I read the comic, I thought Sati was a girl who didn’t know much about the world. In the anime, that aspect was emphasized even more. As a slave, I think she had a sad past, but she feels very indebted to Ike who saved her, and she obediently follows him and is very loyal. I think she is probably the most innocent of all the girls who adore Ike (laughs). I think her honesty is cute.
–He also helps to ease the tense atmosphere in the story.
立花：アイク様も癒されるひと時になっているのかな。戦いの場には出ないので、いつもお留守番していましたが、お話が進むにつれて、陣地の守りを任せられる存在になっていって。心情の変化や成長が見えてくるので演じていても楽しいです。
――演じる際に意識した点や、スタッフからのオーダーやディレクションなどがあれば合わせて教えてください。
福山：最初の収録で（ながはまのりひこ）監督から、「アニメではアイクが転生者であることは描きません。だから人間性はサティと出会ってから最終回までの間に獲得していってほしい」とお聞きしました。僕自身としても、ただでさえ情報量が多い作品なので、転生者である要素を入れたら処理できなかっただろうなと思いました。
なので例えば、ジロンとのコミカルなシーンで、アイクがツッコミを入れる時もあえて冷静に言ってみたり、人間的なギャグシーンとして成立させないようにするけど、セフィーロのお色気シーンへのツッコミは若干成立させてみたり、アイクなりにできる幅を少しずつ広げていくような。大きく成長するわけではないけれど、少しずつ人間らしいコミュニケーションを獲得していく過程を意識して、最終回で完成するように演じました。
立花：収録の最初に監督から「原作と違う設定があります。サティが、一番キャラが変わっているかも」と言われて。コミックを読んだ時は、サティの内面に重い過去を感じましたが、アニメの台本を読んだ時、アイク様との出会いのシーンも重い部分が感じられなくて、「湿っぽくしなくていいのかな」と。なので、ゼロから作り上げるつもりでサティを演じてみたら、ゴーサインが出たので、思うがままやらせていただきました。
あとアイク様と一緒のシーンが多いんですが、呼び方も意識した点で、原作では「アイク様」や「ご主人様」など呼び方がシーンごとに変わっていたので、統一したほうがいいのか相談させていただいて、1カ所以外は「ご主人様」と呼ばせていただくことになりました。
――お互いのキャラクターの印象とお芝居についての感想をお聞かせください。
福山：サティとはよく一緒にいるけど、実はそれほどセリフは交わしていなくて、ポイントポイントのみで。
立花：一緒にいる時はお互いに、視聴者の方が何をしているのかわかるように説明するようなシーンが多くて、心情的な掛け合いはあまりなかったですね。
福山：むしろサティとリリスとジロンの会話によって、ほんわかさせてもらっています（笑）。
立花：収録前は「アイク様はつかみどころがないからどう演じられるのかな」と思っていました。でも第1話の収録で福山さんのお芝居を聞いたら、すごくしっくりきて。ただセリフ数がとても多いので、「大変そうだな」と思いながら、後ろから見守らせていただいています（笑）。
――アイクはモノローグも多いですから大変ですね。
福山：でもモノローグでも本ゼリフでも仮面をかぶっているので、逆に助かっています（笑）。ただ、第1話の収録が体調不良で参加できなくて。その翌週に、病み上がりの状態で収録しました。皆さんの声が入っていたので、普通に収録するのと変わらなかったんですが、「せっかく、みんなと収録できるようになったのに」とすごく寂しくて。その分、第2話からの収録は楽しもうと。作品はシリアスなのに、現場はとてもうるさくて（笑）。
立花：めちゃめちゃにぎやかでしたよね。
福山：それに加えて途中からクシャナ役のくじらさんが参加されたら余計にぎやかになって。本番が始まる前に、僕とくじらさんが息切れするくらいしゃべって。
立花：すっかり疲れてしまわれて（笑）。
福山：そんな笑いが絶えない現場でした。
