Animate Times conducted a countdown interview with the three main cast members until the broadcast! In the second interview, we asked Akira Sekine, who plays Emi Aoi, about his impressions of the work and the concept of “normality,” one of the themes depicted in the work.
-Please tell us your thoughts when you read the original work.
Akira Sekine (Aoi Emi): When I was auditioning, I read the original work, and I felt that it had a delicate worldview. It’s fragile, but it also has the straightforwardness of a high school student’s feelings, and it’s sweet, but also a little prickly. When I was thinking about how to express this complex impression, the song “Konpeito” came to mind.

Sekine: Yes. Konpeito is hard, but also fragile and crumbles easily. It looks cute, but it’s not just round; it’s also spiky, but it also has a refreshing sweetness. That kind of delicacy came to mind as something to express this work.
Next, please introduce the character Saki.
Sekine: Saki is a first-year high school student who is a junior of Makoto-senpai and her master (Ryuji). She is cheerful, and her expressions change all the time, from laughing to getting angry to having a nosebleed. There are many scenes where she shows her lively side, but she is also polite and considerate, paying close attention to her surroundings. I get the impression that she is an honest, kind, energetic but sensitive girl.
–Please tell us your impressions of Makoto and Ryuji, the main characters of the story.
Sekine: Makoto-senpai is also sensitive, isn’t he? But that doesn’t mean he’s fragile; I think it’s because he thinks about a lot of things. And he’s got a real core! Master is a kind person. I think he’s someone who always tries to be on the side of protecting others. Personally, I love the character Ryuji. He’s the kind of character you want to root for when recording.
-What impression do you have of the acting of the actors Umeda Shuuichirou and Uchida Yuuma?
関根：アフレコの休憩中は学校の休み時間のような雰囲気なのですが、その穏やかな空気の根本を作ってくれるのが、梅田さん。まこと先輩のようにみんなを気遣ってくれて、演じやすい空気作りをしてくださるんです。
役にも作品に対しても真摯に取り組まれていて、たくさんのことを考えて、悩みながら演じていらっしゃるという印象を受けました。その試行錯誤している姿が、まさにまこと先輩とリンクしているなぁと感じています。本当にまこと先輩みたいな方です。
――そうなんですね！
関根：内田さんは、ぱいのこ（「先輩はおとこのこ」）チームのムードメーカーのような方で、いつも色々な話題で現場を盛り上げてくださいます。梅田さんも内田さんもとても自然体な方々でキャラクターと重なって見えることが多くて。特にキャラクターの笑い声やリアクションなどのアドリブひとつひとつがとても自然で素敵なので、ぜひ注目していただきたいです！
