We heard a lot about the behind-the-scenes stories surrounding the production, including what was important when adapting this work into an anime and what they kept in mind when bringing out the charm of the characters.
–The final episode has finally aired. I think the production has reached a turning point, but how do you feel about it?
Director Kenta Onishi (hereinafter, Onishi): In the production, I aimed to see how much of the gentle atmosphere and warm feeling that Matoba-sensei depicted could be expressed in the images. I’ll leave it up to you to decide how far we were able to achieve this, but thanks to the hard work of all the staff, I feel that we were able to deliver something that I was satisfied with.
–What impression did you have when you read the original work?
Onishi: Actually, I first read it right after the first volume came out. The illustrations are very beautiful and the touch is delicate. The characters are unique, and as the volumes progress, seasonal events are depicted, and the atmosphere is great. And more than anything, I felt it was nostalgic.
–What do you find nostalgic about it?
Onishi: It’s what they call a “falling heroine” (a work in which the heroine suddenly appears in front of the protagonist. The typical example is that she falls from the sky). It’s nostalgic, cute, and warm. I found those aspects appealing. Also, I wonder how much good deeds Mori Taro must have done in his previous life (laughs). Being surrounded by such wonderful heroines is quite an achievement.
— (laughs) If you’ve been reading the original manga since volume 1, does that mean you knew about it before there was talk of it being made into an anime?
Onishi: That’s right. “Tenshitsuki” is serialized in the monthly magazine “Shonen Gangan”, but I often read the manga in “Gangan Online”, so when I heard about the project, I was already familiar with it.
–What did you keep in mind when trying to express the appeal of this work through animation?
Onishi: Of course, the beauty and delicacy of the illustrations are important, but above all, it all comes down to “drawing Towa cutely.” I wanted to create a heroine that would make you think, “If you had such a cute girl in your house, you’d definitely want to go home.”
To achieve this, we had to create beautiful images, so we asked the cinematographer who was adding effects to add soft processing, and we asked the color designer and art director to be conscious of using light, soft colors. It was about how to bring out the whiteness and lighting of the cover and color frontispiece of the original work.
それからmatoba先生は、華奢だけどスタイルのいいキャラクターや女の子の丸みを帯びたラインを描くのがお上手なので、キャラクターデザインの上武（優也）さんにも、そういうところを意識してほしいとお願いしました。
――画面から優しさ、柔らかさが伝わってきて、毎回、画面づくりがとてもリッチだなと感じていました。
大西：ありがとうございます。特に第12話のラスト、森太郎がバイトから帰ってきてとわが迎えてくれるシーンは、撮影監督と電話で直にやりとりをして、どれくらいの光の加減がいいか細かく調整しながら何回も効果を確認していきました。
――各話の決めカットも力が入っていましたね。
大西：原作でも大ゴマでキャラクターを見せることが多いので、なんとか映像でも再現したかったんです。水着に温泉という第11話がわかりやすかったかなと思います。
――第11話の水着は、原作だとのえる、つむぎ、ひすいの登場シーンが一コマの中で表現されていましたが、それぞれじっくり水着姿を堪能できるようになっていたのが嬉しかったです（笑）。
大西：そうですね、それぞれなめるように映しました（笑）。
――では、森太郎ととわについても伺っていきたいと思います。まず森太郎について監督はどのような男の子だととらえ、どのように描いていこうと考えたのでしょうか？
大西：一番大事にしたのは、穏やかさや優しさも含めた懐の深さがあるところです。とわとはまた別の心の広さ、器の大きさがありますよね。たまに抜けているところもありますが、相手のことをちゃんと気づかって、受け入れられる。実年齢よりもずっと精神年齢が高い子なんです。その一方で、迫ってくるリリーシュカにツッコミを入れるような年相応の男子感があるので、そういう部分で親近感がわくような描き方を大事にしました。
――キャラクターデザインの面ではどのようなことを大事にされましたか？
大西：森太郎に関しては、意外と背が高くないところでしょうか。よくある高身長イケメンではなく、女の子たちと近い目線で接することができるような身長感と、横に跳ねた髪の毛、筋肉質ではなくやや丸みを帯びた輪郭で親しみやすい印象になるようにしました。気をつけたのは、髪の毛の色味です。青に近い紫なので、ひすいと並んだときに被らないようにしました。
――確かに森太郎は親しみやすさがありますよね。
大西：ヒロインたちから人として慕われていますし、つむぎには好意も抱かれています。そういう部分も含めて、女の子に好感を持ってもらえるような清潔感は意識しました。
