On Saturday, June 22nd, a stage greeting was held at Shinjuku Wald 9 to celebrate the screening. Sugita Tomokazu (role of Sakata Gintoki), Sakaguchi Daisuke (role of Shimura Shinpachi), Kugimiya Rie (role of Kagura), and Ono Yuki (role of Tokugawa Shigeshige) appeared on stage.
Amazingly, details about the third installment of “Gintama on Theater 2D,” “Gintama Arc,” have also been revealed.
As part of the Gintama 20th anniversary project, “Gintama on Theater” is a project in which popular episodes of the TV anime “Gintama” are re-edited into a single work and screened on movie screens in cinemas.
As the second installment following “Gintama on Theater 2D: Baragaki-hen,” which was released in November 2023 and received rave reviews, “Gintama on Theater 2D: Ikoku Keisei-hen,” which tells the story of a fleeting “promise” that begins with the love of a prostitute, has begun screening for a limited period of three weeks.
While the audience was still excited and thrilled from having just fully enjoyed “Ikoku Keisei-hen,” known as one of the most moving episodes in the series, the three Yorozuya members began their talk with background music and shadow narration, a familiar theme for “Gintama” fans!
After the three were told by the staff that “a special guest has arrived,” and after they had made their wild guesses, the true identity of the guest was revealed on the screen to be… Tokugawa Shigeshige, the young Shogun of the Edo Shogunate! At that moment, Ono Yuki appeared on the stage dressed just like the Shogun, and Gintoki and Shinpachi burst out, “He’s the Shogun!”, and the excitement in the venue reached a fever pitch!
Amidst thunderous applause, Sugita Tomokazu, Sakaguchi Daisuke, and Kugimiya Rie also took to the stage.
Sugita commented, “The seasons have disappeared, so it’s no longer possible to call it summer or spring. However, today the cherry blossoms are in full bloom,” and the audience erupted in applause. Furthermore, Ono said, “I’ve missed you, my friends,” which drew cheers from the audience.
The first topic of conversation was about “Ikoku Keisei-hen”. When Sakaguchi started by saying, “It’s been over 10 years since we recorded it…”, everyone was flustered by how quickly time had passed, saying, “It’s a bit of a pain…”, and the audience couldn’t help but smile.
Sakaguchi, who likes happy endings, commented with emotion, “For me, ‘Ikoku Keisei-hen’ was not a happy story, but it had a beautiful ending that left a lasting impression on me. The other day, when asked what my favorite novel was, I found myself answering ‘Ikoku Keisei-hen’. It was a novel that made me think that maybe something inside me had changed a little.”
Sugita said, “(Gintoki) has been desperately trying to turn his eyes away from important situations until now. But the time has come when he must seriously focus on important and serious elements. This is an unforgettable episode that speaks directly to the mind and body.” Many in the audience were seen nodding deeply in agreement.
Ono commented, “In his first appearance, he appeared every episode with the mission of being a comedy character (laughs). However, in this episode, I was able to clearly realize, ‘That guy is the general,’ and I could feel his true core, his breadth and character as a person, and it was a very happy series.” At the time, he had just quit his part-time job, and it was impressive to see him reminisce about the time.
Kugimiya commented, “I watched it this morning, and when you really think about it, it’s heavy, but it’s also beautiful and a really wonderful episode.” She also talked about how their favorite spicy ramen restaurant was still around 10 years ago, and how they used to go there all the time, which got the Yorozuya members really excited!
Next, they talked about the third installment of “Gintama on Theater 2D,” “Gintama-hen,” which was announced as a surprise at the end of the screening .
Sugita-san recalled, “The next week, I will be in Kintama, and I will not be on screen. The lead role will be played by this person (Yuichi Nakamura),” and the staff told me. I accepted without any worries.” Sakaguchi-san immediately responded, “You shouldn’t accept it! (laughs)”
Furthermore, there was an episode where Nakamura was sitting in Sugita’s usual place in the dubbing studio. While Sakaguchi and Kugimiya had a strange atmosphere during the recording, saying “It was the usual light-hearted exchange, but something was different,” Sugita said that he had honestly shifted his thoughts to “What is the most interesting way to react?” and “How can we make Nakamura feel most comfortable on set and enjoy himself?” This shows the presence of someone who has led Yorozuya for many years as its leader.
続いて、当日6月22日が徳川茂茂、そしてそれを演じる小野友樹さんご自身のお誕生日であると明かされると、客席からは盛大な拍手が。特製の「ブリーフケーキ」が登場すると、そのクオリティの高さに一同大盛りあがり。会場中が一体となって「将ちゃん＆ゆうちゃん」へお祝いソングが歌われると、小野さんから「将ちゃんはきっとこう言うと思います。『感無量なり』。ありがとうございます！」と感謝の言葉が紡がれ、会場中から本日一番の拍手が贈られた。
その他にもフォトセッションコーナー等も挟み大盛りあがりのなか、舞台挨拶の残り時間は惜しくもわずかに。4名から、最後のメッセージが贈られ、「銀魂オンシアター2D 一国傾城篇」上映記念舞台挨拶は大盛況のまま幕を閉じた。
