In the fifth episode, which aired the other day, Tanjiro is trained by the Snake Pillar, Obanai Iguro. He struggles with the difficult task of weaving his way through the group of bound corps members, dodging Iguro’s sword, and attacking himself, but after days of training, he gradually gets the hang of it and makes a brilliant breakthrough.
In the next training session with the Wind Pillar, Sanemi Shinazugawa, Tanjiro gets in between Sanemi and Genya Shinazugawa, but a fight breaks out. The training session with Sanemi is interrupted and he is forbidden from approaching, and the ending comes when he witnesses the Rock Pillar, Gyomei Himejima, and Inosuke training at a waterfall.
Animate Times is currently running a series of cast interviews! This time, we asked Kenichi Suzumura, who plays Obanai Iguro, about what he was conscious of when he finally used the “Snake Breathing” technique in the “Pillar Training Arc,” and about the most memorable scenes up to episode 5.
–Please tell us your impressions after reading the script for “Pillar Practice” and performing it.
Kenichi Suzukimura (voice of Obanai Iguro) (hereinafter, Suzukimura): Right from the first episode, there’s an atmosphere that suggests something is going to happen.
There are many interesting elements, such as the condition of the Master, the secret activities of Muzan and Nakime, and a place where many demons gather, so I think the “Hashira Training Arc” is super “entertaining”. Also, I get the impression that the tension is compressed.
–The series features the pillars, and while they are strict in training Tanjiro and the other soldiers, and sometimes it is depicted in a comical way, it also has a seriousness to it, with Muzan and the other demons operating in secret. Could you please pick a scene that was memorable to you up until episode 5?
Suzukimura: It has to be the scene in the first episode where Iguro and Shinazugawa fight together. I was happy to be able to voice him. I watched the anime even when Iguro wasn’t appearing, but the images were so beautiful that I sighed every time, and I was looking forward to when Iguro would appear.
Also, I was fighting with young soldiers, one of whom was played by a young man from the agency (Intention), Shuichi Uchida, and it was very moving for me to be able to fight alongside him. I was there with a warm, caring attitude, but I was careful not to let that get on Iguro’s nerves.
–As Tanjiro trains with various pillars, the expression on Iguro’s face when he visits him after training with Kanroji in episode 5 was incredible.
鈴村：「刀鍛冶の里編」で蜜璃に靴下をあげるシーンがありましたが、実は原作であのエピソードを知ったとき、「ああ、そうなんだ」と思った覚えがあります。「刀鍛冶の里編」でやり取りが描かれていたことで、今回のエピソードも相まって、伊黒のいろいろな面を知ることができて嬉しいです。
――その後、伊黒が炭治郎たちに行った稽古は、太刀筋矯正というハードなものでした。
鈴村：彼は真面目ですよね。「それくらい鬼との戦いは過酷だ」ということだと思います。いつも優しい甘露寺が行う稽古でさえも、すごいストレッチで炭治郎が痛がっていましたし、みんな真面目で厳しいというか。超人的なことをやるためには、高いハードルを越えなくてはいけないんでしょうね。
ただ、ああいうシーンを見て「週刊少年ジャンプ」の王道だなと思いました。僕が子供の頃に見ていたマンガでも敵が強いと主人公たちが修業するんですよね。それを見て僕も空き地で修業した覚えがあるし、今の子供たちも「大変なことがあったときは、修業をして成長しなくてはいけないんだ」とうまく真意が伝わって感じ取ってくれたらいいですね。
――今年2月にワールドツアー上映に際して行われた舞台挨拶では「リアクションをとっているところは昔に比べて、人間らしくなった」とおっしゃっていましたが、そのような変化や成長を感じた点は？
鈴村：「最初の印象よりも、いろいろな人と意外と関わるんだな、コミュニケーションがとれるんだな」というところが描かれてきたなと感じました。演じる側の目線から言えば、そういうシーンが出てきてホッとしましたし、嬉しかったです。僕らは台本から役をどう広げるかを拾っていくので、伊黒がどんな人物なのか描かれるシーンが出てくることによって、ヒントをたくさんいただけますし、「こんな人なんだ」と新たに発見している感覚です。
――炭治郎と初めて出会ったときの柱合会議前の裁判のシーンでは松の木の上に寝そべっていましたね。
鈴村：きっと感じ悪かったですよね。そこから考えれば、不死川と一緒に行動したり、しゃべっていたり、任務で背中を任せたりするシーンもあって、「意外と人のこと信用してるじゃん」と思いました。
以前の裁判のシーンでは「信用しない」と言っていましたが、ちゃんと彼の中には誰を認めている、認めていないという線引きがあって、描かれてはいないけれど、何かのきっかけでその判断をしているのではないかなと思います。
――先ほどお話しいただいたように、第一話の冒頭の戦闘シーンはカッコよかったです。
鈴村：ここまでずっと「呼吸」をしないできましたから。やっと「蛇の呼吸」を言えて嬉しかったです。
「こんなふうに戦うんだ」とか「こんなふうに鬼と向き合っているんだ」と以降の話数への展開に期待が膨らむシーンにもなっていたと思うので、ご覧いただいた皆さまにも喜んでもらえたのではないでしょうか。
――伊黒は、「竈門炭治郎 立志編」の柱合会議前の裁判のシーンや、「遊郭編」のラストの天元との会話、「刀鍛冶の里編」の甘露寺の回想シーンなど、これまでスポット的に登場していましたが、「柱稽古編」では戦闘シーンなども描かれています。どんな想いで収録に臨まれたのでしょうか？
鈴村：「柱稽古編」の台本をいただいて、読んでみたら第一話の冒頭のシーンがあったので、嬉しい気持ちになりました。僕の中では「まだ伊黒としてそんなにしゃべっていないんだよな」とずっと引っかかっていたので、今回やっと伊黒がたくさん描かれたことで、今後はやっと胸を張って「『鬼滅の刃』に出ています」と言える、そんな気持ちでした。
――今回、「蛇の呼吸」を発したときに意識されたことは？
鈴村：必殺技的なものなので、声を張るのが一番フィットしやすいし、ましてや戦闘シーンということで、敵もたくさんいて、音楽も確実に盛り上がっているし、SE（効果音）もすごいので、負けないくらいに声を張るのがセオリーだと思います。でも伊黒は、ちゃんと力点を置きながら声を張らない、決めるところは決めつつ、セオリーにはのっとらずにセリフを言わないといけないので、実は結構難しくて。
技を出す前に言葉を発するのは、「見栄を切る」ような、日本の伝統文化的なところがありますが、形骸化させないことも大切なので、声を張らなかったり、見栄を切るところだけに傾倒せず、日常的に繋がっているように発声できるかどうか、みたいなところが伊黒としては大事なんじゃないかと思うので、リアリティを持たせられるように意識してやっています。
