TAKASHI YAMAZAKI

Born in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture in 1964. He was deeply influenced by seeing Star Wars and Close Encounters of the Third Kind during his childhood, and decided to pursue a career in special effects. After graduating from Asagaya Art College, he joined Shirogumi Co., Ltd. in 1986. He was in charge of SFX and digital compositing in films directed by Itami Juzo, such as The Great Sick (1993) and Quiet Life (1995).

He made his directorial debut with “Juvenile” in 2000. He is a leading figure in visual expression and VFX, making full use of advanced visual effects using CG. His work “Always: Sunset on Third Street” (2005) was a hot topic for its VFX depiction of the heartwarming human kindness, vitality, and atmosphere of the Showa era streets, which won 12 awards at the 29th Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director. His works “Eternal Zero” (2013) and “Stand by Me Doraemon” (2014) each won Best Picture and eight other awards at the 38th Academy Awards, as well as the Best Animated Film Award. He also directed, wrote the screenplay, and was in charge of VFX for “Godzilla 1.0” (23), which became the first Japanese film to win the Best Visual Effects Award at the 96th Academy Awards.

YOSHIO SUZUKI

At the age of 19, he saw a job posting for a part-time job at Toho and participated in the production of the original Godzilla suit as an assistant to the Godzilla Modeling Department headed by Teizou Tokimitsu. He then worked on many special effects films as an art director, including the main art for Godzilla vs. Destroyah. The Godzilla series he has worked on includes Godzilla (1954), Godzilla vs. Destroyah (1955), and Godzilla vs. Destroyah.

The original Godzilla is finally coming back to the big screen in a 4K remaster. I’m excited to be able to relive the moment when the first Godzilla, which had such a big impact on me, was born.

We also had the opportunity to hear some valuable stories from Suzuki Yoshio, who was involved in the design of the original Godzilla and experienced it first-hand.

Will new testimonies be revealed in the 70th year? I can’t wait.
