“Crayukaba” and “Baccano!” are based on the original work, screenplay, and direction by Shigeyoshi Tsukahara, who won the “Audience Award/Gold Award” in the Animated Feature Feature category at the 2023 Fantasia International Film Festival. and Kuramer Kagali'', which is based on the spin-off novel of Kurayukaba” written by Ryogo Narita, who is known for “Durarara!!”, will be released at the same time.

This time, we will be talking directly with Hakuzan Kanda, who plays the main character Shotaro, and Tomoyo Kurosawa, who plays the heroine Tanne, in “Kurayukaba.” Mr. Hakuyama is active as the storyteller who can't get tickets the most right now,'' but he actually appeared as a voice actor in the TV anime Hisone to Masotan” broadcast in 2018, co-starring with Mr. Kurosawa. In addition to the charm of the work, we will also deliver an interview unique to the two people who have such a connection.

–First, please tell us about the circumstances leading up to your appearance. As for Hakuyama-san, I heard that it was an offer, not an audition.

Mr. Hakuzan Kanda (hereinafter referred to as Hakuzan): That’s right. I was first contacted by a senior colleague of mine named Yorimitsu Sakamoto, who is a benshi and a benshi, and whom I respect very much.He had known Director Tsukahara for over 10 years. So, for me, it was a situation where I couldn’t refuse (lol).

If it were a small role like Mob, I would be happy to appear in it, but this time Shotaro is a character that everyone cherishes, and it’s not like the script took years and years to write and the production cost a lot of money. Is it? I understand because I have a lot of respect for professional voice actors, but I felt sorry if anime fans thought, “I wish it wasn’t that person who played the leading role.”

–Maybe it’s because I already know how great the voice actors are.

Hakuzan: Yes. But then Raiko-sensei introduced me and said, “You have a great director called Tsukahara, so what do you think?” I thought that if Raiko-sensei, whom I respect so much, would say so much, I would give it my best, even though I might cause trouble.

Actually, it might be rude to the people who auditioned to appear in this way, but as a viewer myself, I’ve always thought that I don’t really like it when amateurs appear in anime. There was a place where I was.

I thought it might be against my beliefs to do it myself, but since the job was to use the same voice, I had second thoughts about turning down the opportunity. To be honest, I was a little worried about whether I would be able to do it, but when I first got the offer, I was happy and I felt really grateful.

–How about Mr. Kurosawa?

Tomoyo Kurosawa (hereinafter referred to as Kurosawa): When I was offered the audition, I initially accepted the role of a girl named Saki who frequented Shotaro’s office. Actually, I was at a time when I wasn’t sure about my schedule, but I found Mr. Hakuyama’s name in the proposal I received. In the previous work I worked with (Hisone to Masotan), I played the role of a dragon, but when I found out that he would be playing the role of a human this time, I thought, “I definitely want to be in it!” , I had an audition.

–As a result, you ended up playing the role of Tanne.

Kurosawa: That’s right. When we first recorded the first 15 minutes of the scene, Tanne didn’t have many lines and I didn’t think she had any interaction with Shotaro at all (lol), but when the main story came around, we had a lot of scenes together. I was happy that there was a scene.

Kurosawa: Actually, I was the only one who was helped (lol).

–During the audition, were you able to accept both Saki and Tanne?

Kurosawa: Basically, I accepted it as Saki. I remember being asked to read the book after it was over, and I was just as enthusiastic about it.

――Then, what made you decide to play Tanne in a way that was unexpected?

Kurosawa: I didn’t expect that at all! Saki was more relatable, or rather, I found it easier to empathize with her, so I was like, “Is it okay for me to play such a beautiful role?” (laughs)
