What is the first ever attempt at “full-body dubbing”? The joy of dubbing under the pressure of “possibly ruining the entire film” | An interview with Koichi Yamadera (voice of Beetlejuice) and Mariya Ise (voice of Astrid) in the Japanese dub of “Beetlejuice”Tim Burton’s latest film, “Beetlejuice,” is now in theaters from Friday, September 27, 2024.

This film is a sequel set 35 years after the 1988 film “Beetlejuice.” Michael Keaton continues to play Beetlejuice from the previous film, and Winona Ryder plays Lydia. Jenna Ortega, who played Wednesday in “Wednesday,” plays Lydia’s daughter Astrid. The cast includes a cast of all-stars, both old and new, from Hollywood, making this a film worth watching.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is still a popular horror comedy. To bring out the best in this scary and fun movie, the voice actors are also luxurious. If you look at the cast, you’ll find that the voices of the actors will sound natural to anime fans. You’ll definitely want to watch it dubbed!

In this article, we interviewed two of the voice actors, Koichi Yamadera, who plays Beetlejuice, and Mariya Ise, who plays Astrid, Lydia’s daughter. They talked about their impressions of the film, the unique joys of dubbing, and more, about the first-ever attempt at full-body dubbing.

–What kind of image did you have of “Beetlejuice” originally? How did you feel when you actually did the dubbing this time?

Koichi Yamadera (hereinafter Yamadera), who plays Beetlejuice: I wasn’t involved in the first film, but it had a strong image of being one of Tim Burton’s early hits. When it came to the character of Beetlejuice, the first image that came to mind was the character visual played by Michael Keaton. Watching it again this time, I felt, “This is what a horror comedy is all about!”

Mariya Ise (Ise), who plays Astrid: The first film was released in 1988, and I was actually born in 1988. So, since it was released in the year I was born, I finally got to know the work “Beetlejuice” properly when I got the opportunity to appear in it.

Tim Burton has directed many films, including “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” but I felt that the worldview of “Beetlejuice” has not changed at all in the last 35 years. I was impressed that the worldview that the director wanted to express has been firmly rooted in him since the early days of “Beetlejuice.”

I am now honored to be appearing in the sequel, playing the role of Lydia’s daughter Astrid, who has become a mother 35 years later.

-What was it like actually playing Astrid and Beetlejuice?

Ise: The character Astrid, played by Jenna Ortega, has an introverted side typical of adolescence, and the conflict of not being able to communicate well with her mother was depicted. It was a little difficult to express such a part, but it was a lot of fun and rewarding.

Yamadera: Michael Keaton has a well-crafted voice, so I thought that this is what Beetlejuice sounds like, and I tried to act as close to him as possible. Michael Keaton creates his voice for his lines, but when it comes

to singing, his voice is normal. I didn’t dub the singing, so you might be wondering, “Yama-chan, what kind of voice are you creating?” But if you watch the subtitled version, you’ll understand, but I want to say in advance that “Michael Keaton has that kind of voice too!” (laughs).

Ise: I had the opportunity to watch the preview with Mr. Yamadera, and when he played Beetlejuice, it sounded exactly like Michael Keaton was speaking, which was really good.

I recommend you watch both the subtitled and dubbed versions and make a proper judgment. I can say that you can watch the dubbed version with confidence!
