“Given” has many fans as a supreme BL work, and in 2024, the final story of the main story will be released as a two-part movie, making it a year of endless topics. To commemorate the release of the final chapter, “Given: To the Sea,” which will be released on September 20th, we will introduce the profiles and personalities of the main characters, as well as notable scenes.

In the summer of his first year of high school, Ugetsu transfers to the same high school as Akihiko, and Akihiko becomes his first friend. In the spring of his third year of high school, Ugetsu, who was living alone in a sunless semi-basement house, moves in with Akihiko, who has become her boyfriend. When it’s time to graduate, they decide to break up for each other’s sake, but they continue living together, still with regrets.
Ever since seeing Mafuyu’s first live performance, Ugetsu has taken a liking to Mafuyu, and when Mafuyu visits him, he tells her about his relationship with Akihiko. Ugetsu says, “Maybe I should use you as inspiration for a new song.” The two geniuses gradually become good friends.
Ugetsu has been winning first place overseas since her junior days. Her technique, the beauty and clarity of her sound, and her ability to express all kinds of emotions through her music, be it joy, sadness, or pain, are all sensual. Furthermore, Ugetsu’s playing has the power to resonate with people, making her a violinist who can truly be called a genius.
Akihiko, who has recently begun to find music enjoyable, finally tells Ugetsu that he wants to try a different kind of music, and decides to leave. Even though she has been waiting so long to get away from Akihiko, when Akihiko actually tells her she doesn’t want to, she reveals her feelings.
After that, Ugetsu goes to watch the live audition for the countdown festival in which Given is taking part, and when she hears the music that Akihiko is making, she realizes that Akihiko has started to love music again. He says that he is now enjoying the music that he used to cause him so much pain.
They say that love is blind, so it’s natural that first love is so much fun that one loses interest in music. But Ugetsu wasn’t allowed to do that. Perhaps the sounds Ugetsu made were a strong essence that deepened feelings of loneliness and solitude. Who would have thought that she would lose her freedom in music after finding someone special? It seems like a
wonderful thing to have something that you can’t throw away more than the things you love, but watching Ugetsu’s love story, I thought it was cruel after all. I would love
to hear Ugetsu play a violin concerto at least once!
