We have just received the official report from the opening performance, which featured Shigematsu Chiharu, Osaka Ryota, Takahashi Hiroki, and Tsuchiya Rio.
This reading play is based on Edogawa Ranpo’s full-length novel “Kejin Gengi.” Kenta Fukasaku is in charge of composition and direction, and as the title suggests, the Boy Detectives from the “Kogoro Akechi” series play an active role, and original elements such as the appearance of the strong-grown Kobayashi Boy, also known as Yoshio Kobayashi, are also included.
On the opening day, September 3rd, Chiharu Shigematsu appeared as Yoshio Kobayashi. In addition, Ryota Osaka played the role of the Phantom Thief Twenty Faces, Hiroki Takahashi played the role of Kogoro Akechi, and Rio Tsuchiya played the role of Fumiyo Akechi. Here is a report on the opening day of this reading play.
Before the show started, the sound of the clock ticking rang out ominously in the venue. When the scheduled start time came, the performers took to the stage to the sound of bombing. This is a mystery piece that uncovers the truth behind a horrific serial murder case. However, when I listened to the story to the end, I found myself thinking back on the meaning of the monologue, “To all the adults who were once children…” “Love” was also a keyword, and I felt that the characters were expressing not only sexual depictions, but also parental love and even an unimaginably terrifying form of “love for humanity.”
The performers convey the feelings that are put into these stories to the audience through their “voices.” Reading plays are not like novels or manga that are read at an individual’s own pace, nor are they like dramas or anime that have visual expressions, and are also different from stage plays that are expressed through body and facial movements. One of the features of a reading play is that the situations and scenes the characters find themselves in are conveyed through their readings and voices. The performers this time performed with their “voices” that allowed the audience to see the outlook on life of each character. Although many of them played multiple roles, they performed brilliantly.
Furthermore, the speakers’ readings were not only easy to listen to, as they were all professional voices, but also had a natural intonation and acting style that made the story flow easily. It was possible to experience the enjoyment and depth that only a reading drama can offer, which is different from reading a novel or watching a film. In terms of the production, the lighting and sound effects increased the audience’s anxiety and tension. The music played throughout the performance was filled with a sense of tragedy that vaguely brought to mind the scenes from around 1950, the setting of the work, and made the experience even more immersive.
The Edogawa Ranpo masterpiece reading drama “The Boy Detectives Club – The Fantasy of the Transformed Man” will be performed multiple times at Kinokuniya Southern Theater Takashimaya from September 3rd to 8th, with different performers for each performance. On some days, a woman will play the role of Kobayashi Yoshio, and the differences in the way of expression are also worth noting.
