Kyoto Animation’s 2025 anime lineup has been announced, including the theatrical release of Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid: The Lonely Dragon, a long-awaited new film in the popular series, as well as the broadcast of City the Animation, Kyoto Animation’s first completely new anime in six years.
Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid is a heartwarming comedy about interspecies communication between a dragon girl named Tohru and humans, created by Cool Kyou Shinja. This is a new movie following the first season of the TV anime in 2017 and the second season in 2021.
The film is directed by Tatsuya Ishihara, who commented, “Kanna, Kobayashi, Thor and the others will jump off the screen and run wild all over the screen!”
The voices of Kobayashi-san, Tohru, and Kanna will continue to be played by Mutsumi Tamura, Yuki Kuwahara, and Maria Naganawa, respectively, and they have also provided commentary videos. The teaser visual and the promotional video released at the same time feature Kanna’s meaningful line, “Bye-bye, Kobayashi,” and are a different atmosphere from previous Maid Dragon series.
“CITY THE ANIMATION” is based on the girls’ running comedy “CITY” by Arawi Keiichi, which was serialized in “Morning” (Kodansha) from 2016 to 2021.
The director will be Taichi Ishidate, who has worked on “Beyond the Boundary” and “Violet Evergarden”. A teaser visual was released to coincide with the announcement of the anime adaptation. The visual evokes the “fun” of an upturned toy box.
The cast for the three characters has also been announced: Mikako Komatsu will play Nagumo Midori, Aki Toyosaki will play Niikura, and Yui Ishikawa will play Izumi Wako.
The teaser PV, which was released at the same time, is a fun and cute video that captures the individuality of the work. In addition, commentary videos from the original author, Keiichi Arawi, and the director, Taichi Ishidate, have also been released on YouTube and social media.
