To commemorate the release, we are now releasing an archive of the special program “Touken Ranbu: Kaiden: The Close Samurai” that was broadcast on DMM TV on August 15th!
We have also released an official interview with Kenichi Suemitsu, who has written and directed the play so far and is also in charge of the script for this production.
In addition, a countdown illustration is currently being released on the official X website, and to commemorate today’s release, a countdown illustration drawn by Mari Takada, who is in charge of character design for the film, has also arrived.

& Scene cuts from the main story have been released! This special
program will feature Araki Tarusuke, who plays Heshikiri Hasebe, Maeno Tomoaki, who plays Yamabagiri Kunihiro, and Toriumi Kosuke, who plays Mikazuki Munechika, and will introduce the highlights of the film in detail.
The special program also featured the opening two minutes of the story, which will mark the beginning of the story. The footage shows a conversation between the Saniwa and Hasebe Heshikiri, as well as the Touken Danshi gathering together in concern for the situation.

──The anime “Touken Ranbu Kai -Ten Den: The Samurai Close by-” (hereafter “Ten Den”) is being produced as a completely new original story. Please tell us what you paid special attention to and what you focused on when writing the story. Also, what parts of the story would you like people to enjoy in particular?
Kenichi Suemitsu (hereinafter Suemitsu): “Not just this time, but the first thing is to ‘cherish the characters.’ Because it’s written by a human being, the author’s subjectivity inevitably peeks in from the side, but I try to first discard that subjectivity as much as possible and focus on the characters themselves that I can scoop up from the original game.
“Touken Ranbu ONLINE” is a big piece of content with over 10 million users. There may not be an interpretation of the characters that satisfies all 10 million of them. However, the premise is that we do not want to create a work that disappoints all of you who love the world of “Touken Ranbu”. With that in mind, we hope that you will enjoy this completely new original story, the whole of which no one has yet seen, with a fresh feeling.
–The final episode of the TV series was broadcast the other day. What are your thoughts on having watched all eight episodes of the anime “Touken Ranbu Kai – Kyoden – Moyuru Honnoji-” (hereafter “Kyoden”) so far?
Suemitsu: “I was in charge of the script and direction for the stage adaptation that was the basis for Touken Ranbu Kai, and I got the impression that the stage adaptation was animated with great care. I was fascinated to see how the play was woven with expressions that are only possible with the medium of anime.
Some of the differences between the stage play and the anime were written in the script for the anime version, and I was grateful that they respected that as well. In particular, the daily life scenes in the Honmaru were parts that had to be omitted in the stage version, so I was happy to see them in the anime form.
–What was the feeling of teamwork among the six swords that will be taking part this time? Which sword boys are you paying attention to, and which characters are you looking forward to seeing in action?
Suemitsu: “The battle force is made up of swordsmen who know of Yamabagiri Kunihiro’s failure and those who can look at it from an objective standpoint. Since Heshikiri Hasebe is the protagonist, what era would be best for him to go on the campaign? Also, what era would be best for the story to be set in, which is both a prequel and a sequel to “Kyoden”? After thinking about it, we naturally decided to depict the “Battle of Yamazaki” in the context of the “Battle of Bitchu Takamatsu Castle.”
The story will focus on the relationship between Heshikiri Hasebe and Yamabagiri Kunihiro. I’m also really looking forward to seeing the battle of Okurikara, which wasn’t depicted in “Kyoden.”
–What do you think is the appeal of the content “Touken Ranbu”?
末満:「日本刀という文化が今もなお現代に伝わっているということに大きな魅力を感じます。日本刀は日本の歴史と共に在り続けてきました。あれだけの数の刀剣男士がいながら、キャラ被りをしていない多彩さも凄いですよね。
それだけの多彩さを生み出すことができる刀剣たちの物語の強さが「刀剣乱舞」の魅力だと思います。あとはまだまだ実態を掴むことのできない「刀剣乱舞」としての物語ですよね。原案であるゲームの物語がどのように進んでいくのか。いつかそれを見届けたいですね。
