“Mononoke Karakasa” Hiroshi Kamiya unravels the truth of the medicine seller and the inner palace where passions swirl [Interview]The TV anime series “Mononoke”, which was broadcast in 2007 and became a hot topic for its unique worldview and overwhelming visual beauty, is now being made into a movie! “Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa” will be released nationwide on Friday, July 26, 2024.

Asa (voiced by Tomoyo Kurosawa) and Kame (voiced by Aoi Yuki) step into the inner palace as new maids. What on earth did the medicine seller sense when he appeared in the “garden of women” where the passions and grudges of many people swirl…?

To commemorate the release of the movie, Animate Times interviewed Hiroshi Kamiya, who plays the medicine seller. He talked about the highlights of the film, behind-the-scenes stories, and his impressions of the cast’s acting.

–Please tell us your impression and appeal of the film “Mononoke the Movie.”

Kamiya Hiroshi (hereinafter, Kamiya), who plays the medicine seller: This film is a legitimate evolution from the TV series. The visuals are simply “amazing” from beginning to end. The trailer that has been released is short, but imagine it lasting 90 minutes. I think it will be a film that you have never seen before. But I feel that this is the kind of film version of “Mononoke” that everyone wanted to see.

–It was an amazing video that made it clear to everyone that it took incredible skill, effort, and time.

Kamiya: When the TV series was first broadcast, I was surprised and thought, “Wow, this is an incredible anime.” When I think about it now, I’m amazed that they were able to make it every week with this quality. I don’t know what the production situation was like at the time, so it’s all hindsight, though (laughs). I was given the opportunity to be involved in such an incredible anime, and I felt like I was thrown right into the middle of it (laughs). I have the impression that this movie version also has incredible visuals.

–You’re playing the role of a medicine seller. How did you approach the recording?

Kamiya: I was chosen through an audition, and at the time, Director Nakamura (Kenji) told me, “Kamiya-san, you are Kamen Rider No. 2. In the TV series you are Kamen Rider No. 1, and in the movie version you are Kamen Rider No. 2.” That pretty much explained it all, so I answered, “Okay!”

The director also told me, “This time, the medicine seller is the type who actively helps people. The medicine seller in the TV series is the type who watches what happens and then goes out and draws his sword when the conditions are right. On the other hand, in the movie version, he is the type who jumps in to help people, even sacrificing himself to get information.” I thought, “I can do that medicine seller too.” I thought that I couldn’t handle the image of a medicine seller who is “charming, even though I don’t know what he’s thinking.” Of course, I think the unique atmosphere of the medicine seller is a common denominator, but that is just an atmosphere, and since he properly proposed the roots, I thought that if I composed it based on that, it would become my own “medicine seller No. 2.” I finally saw the chance of success, so I created my own “medicine seller No. 2.”
