The main character of this work is a genius who has been trained as a killer since childhood and is able to kill any enemy in a brilliant manner within 6 seconds. One day, he, commonly known as “Fable,” receives a sudden order from the organization’s boss, telling him not to kill anyone for a year, and ends up living a completely new life without killing anyone. His name is Akira Sato, and he is living a normal life for the first time. However, he can’t let go of the disturbing atmosphere that pervades his peaceful daily life. Will he be able to complete this most difficult mission?
This time, we interview Kazuyuki Okitsu, the voice actor who plays Fable (Akira Sato) in the anime. In addition to their impressions of the work and Akira Sato, who plays the role, they also answered the question, “What would you do if you were told that you couldn’t do voice acting for a year?”
–Please tell us what you thought when you first read the original work.
Kazuyuki Okitsu (hereinafter referred to as Okitsu), who plays Akira Sato (Fable): Actually, before I auditioned, I had already bought the movie because it was recommended to me by a friend. When I actually read it, I found it so interesting that I read it all in one night. I wanted other people to read this manga, so I recommended it to a voice actor and said, “This is a really interesting manga, would you like to read it?” and I lent him the entire volume. When I met him the other day, he said, “I haven’t read it yet…” but I really hope he’s read it already (lol).
――So you knew about the work before you auditioned?
Okitsu: Yes. But I lent it right after I read it, so I couldn’t read it again. So, when I was told about the audition, I thought it was the perfect opportunity and bought the electronic version. And then I read it all the way to the end. It’s an interesting work no matter how many times I read it.
–Do you usually get into outlaw entertainment?
Okitsu: I started watching it more often when I became an adult. As I grew older, I began to think, “If there is an underground society in this world, there might be someone fighting inside it.” I feel like I’ve been able to enjoy outlaw works since I started to feel that it might not be possible to clearly draw a line between “evil” and some other criteria.
–I can now enjoy works that do not depict a world of good, punishment, and evil.
Okitsu: That’s right. Also, with works like this, you don’t know if it’s true or a lie. It seems possible, but it would be scary if it were true. Perhaps it’s fun to see the lines between what is reality and what is fantasy become blurred. Anyway, when I read this kind of work, I think, “Let’s not do bad things.”
–One of the great things about entertainment is that you can learn things like that. You were already familiar with this work, but how did you feel when you were chosen to play the main character?
Okitsu: In addition to Fable, I auditioned for the roles of Kuro (Kuroshio) and Takahashi. When I was told that I had been chosen, I thought it was Takahashi who spent the most time auditioning. Then he said, “I’m playing the role of Sato.” I didn’t think Fable would exist, so at first I thought, “Who is Sato?” (lol).
I was surprised when I was told again, “This is Akira Sato from Fable, the main character.” That’s how surprising it was. I also thought it was amazing that the boss deliberately chose the name “Akira Sato”, which is so memorable that even I, who read the original work, instantly thought “Who is this?”.
――After it was announced that you would be playing the role of Fable, what kind of reactions did you get from those around you?
Okitsu: I received comments from people who had read the original story, saying, “I couldn’t imagine Sato’s voice at all, but Okitsu-san would be perfect.” I was so happy!
