This time, it will be after the broadcast of episode 5, so we will mainly be asking about the episodes around that time and the new characters that have appeared. Also, it seems that the feelings that Moe Mizuna has towards Natsuo will be a highlight from now on…!?
— From episode 4 to episode 5, Natsuo and Ryuji grow closer. They are two prominent male characters in the story, so what did you think of these episodes?
Takahashi: They are both men who have stayed on the island and share the same feelings for the island, so they get along well. I thought there would never be any conflicts in that respect.
The process by which the two characters, who had no intention of understanding each other, come to understand each other by working together and thinking about things, was carefully depicted, so it was easy to follow how a friendship blossomed between them.
Although the story has a large female cast, it also manages to depict a detailed human drama centered on the friendship between boys. I think the strength of this work is reflected in the friendship between the two.
–What did you think of the interaction between Hosoya and Ono?
Takahashi: We often recorded separately, but we did get to record together once. In the studio, Hosoya was the one who talked the most, and Ono was the one who laughed at him, which I thought was very Ryuji and Natsu-like.
The two of them have worked together on many occasions, so I think they have a bond that they have built up over the years. That’s why the characters naturally become closer to each other, and I think that’s how they acted.
–And speaking of episodes 4 and 5, Catherine also had a prominent role to play.
Takahashi: There are not many adults in this work. Catherine appears as a person who takes on the role of adults. When she became accustomed to the school, I felt that the presence of adults is important for children, like a guide. There is such a sense of being a pillar.
When she first appeared, she was what you would call a bad person, but she had her own reasons, which are explored in more depth in this anime. She is a comical character, but she also plays a very important role as someone that Natsuo and the others can consult with.
彼女を演じる日笠さんは、前回お話した水菜萌が訥々（とつとつ）と話す事に悩んでいたところ、とても真摯に相談に乗ってくれました。そういう意味でもキャサリンとリンクしているし、頼りになる人だと思います。キャサリンも大活躍のアニメ『ATRI』です！（笑）。
――（笑）。そんなキャサリンに、先生をお願いしたのも水菜萌でした。夏生を学校に誘うシーンなど、水菜萌の言葉やお願いがきっかけで物語が動く部分も少なからずあるように思うのですが、こういったシーンはどんなことを考えましたか？
髙橋：水菜萌は、島のみんなの生活を良くしたいと思っていて、またとても大きな愛を持っている女の子です。その愛をもってみんなが良くなるにはどうしたらいいかを考えていると思います。すぐに変化はおきないかもしれないけれど、子供たちやキャサリンのことを考えて、学校に1回来てみた方がいいと誘えるのはおそらく彼女だけなんです。
また、水菜萌はそういう役割を苦だとは思っていないですよね。今までは先生みたいな立場で子供たちに勉強を教えていたけれど、キャサリンへの依頼も先生を辞めたかった訳じゃない。ただただ、子供たちがより良い環境で勉強できるようにしてあげたかっただけなんじゃないかなと。
キャサリンが元々先生だったことはわかっていたし、もう一度彼女が本来望んでいた姿になってもらいたい。果たしてそこまで考えていたかは、わからないところはあるのですが…誰にとってもより良い環境を作るために誘ったと思います。単純に、人が増えた方が嬉しいですしね。
――また、水菜萌は島の子供たちと掛け合うシーンも多いと思います。演じてみていかがでしたか？
髙橋：彼女は人に何かを与えることに躊躇いがない人なので、本当に家族みたいな感じで掛け合いをさせてもらいました。
今までは彼女が一番年上の存在だったから、自分が守らなければという想いがあったのだと思います。けれどナツくんやキャサリンが来てくれたので、そんな気持ちも少し軽くなった。一緒にご飯を食べるみたいな日常の風景が彼女としても楽しくなっているんじゃなかなと。
確かに物が無いとか電気がつかないとか、生活の中で不便を感じることはあると思います。でも、子供たちが楽しいから水菜萌も楽しいみたいな。掛け合いはわちゃわちゃして、シンプルに幸せで満たされるようなシーンでしたし、アフレコも楽しかったです。
