“Will Kojiro be blown away that easily? Will he get frustrated and immediately go into combat mode?” The troubles and worries he went through made him a character he’s very attached to | TV anime “The Master Nigewazu” series Part 5: Interview with Mari Hino, who plays KojiroThe historical spectacle manga “Nigejou no Wakakuni” by popular author Matsui Yusei, who is also the creator of “Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro” and “Assassination Classroom”, has been adapted into a TV anime. It has been broadcast on TOKYO MX, BS11, and 30 other stations nationwide since July 2024. The protagonist of this work is Hojo Tokiyuki, who lost everything due to a rebellion by Ashikaga Takauji, a trusted shogunate official. Tokiyuki escapes to Suwa, where he meets friends and overcomes the difficulties that come his way by “running away” and “surviving”.

Animate Times is running a series of interviews that delves deeper into the appeal of this work! In the fifth installment, we spoke to Mari Hino, who plays Kojiro. Acting is something that can change the way you see a character with just a little tweak. Hino reflected that playing Kojiro was a challenge she had never taken on before. She continued with a smile, “The worries and hardships I went through made this character something I really like.”

–Looking back at the story from the second episode in which Kojiro made his appearance up until now, what scene was the most memorable for you?

Hino Mari, voice of Kojiro (hereafter referred to as Hino): The scene that made the biggest impression on me during the dubbing was when Kojiro gets excited when Tokiyuki gets a score in the dog chase (episodes 4 and 5). At that moment, the sound director, Fujita-san, told me, “You can show more of your childlike side.” So, I felt like the final piece of my role as Kojiro was filled in.

–The last piece, huh?

Hino: Yes. I thought Kojiro was a cool guy, so I tried to focus on that when I played him. But, obviously, a person can’t be just cool. He’s smart, strong, manly, but also a little barbaric. As I received direction many times, I realized that I hadn’t dug deep enough and there were many things I was lacking in my performance.

As I acted, various pieces fell into place, but what finally clicked for me was the way Kojiro gets excited, as I mentioned earlier. He has a mature side, but when he gets excited, he also has a childlike side. After receiving that direction, I finally felt like I had a clear direction for how I wanted to play Kojiro.

— I also love the original work and read it all the time, and even among the members of the Runaways, Kojiro seems like a character who you can see many different sides to and look forward to watching him grow.
