— “Touken Ranbu Kai – Touken Ranbu: The Close Samurai” (hereafter referred to as “Touken Ranbu” ) is being produced as a completely new original work. What impression did you have when you heard about the project?
“The artwork in this work is beautiful and the action scenes are very spirited, so I think you’ll feel the power even more when you watch it on a big screen. There are many media mix works for ‘Touken Ranbu,’ but among them, the theatrical version is a big deal for everyone who has supported the anime ‘Touken Ranbu’ up until now. So when I heard that the prequel to the TV anime ‘Touken Ranbu Kai – Kyoden Moyuru Honnoji-‘ (hereinafter ‘Kyoden’) would be released in theaters, I was happy and thought it was a very interesting endeavor.”
–What was your impression of the story after reading the script for “Den”?
“The first thing that made me happy was that Okurikara was going to battle. This story also has crossovers with historical events, and I got the impression that the stories of Heshikiri Hasebe and Yamabagiri Kunihiro were the main focus. I feel like these two characters don’t often have a connection, so this is an original story that puts the spotlight on them, and I thought it was a completely different approach from previous works, which was refreshing.”
-What kind of character do you think Okurikara is?
“I think Touken is a lone wolf who wants to stick to his own beliefs rather than communicate with people. As for Touken Ranbu Kai, I felt that more than any other work, it had a strong core of being a sword, that is, a weapon for fighting. One of his characteristic lines is, “I decide where I die,” and up until now he has always wanted to live as a weapon, as something to fight with, since he is, after all, a weapon. This became a very big part of his identity this time, and it was very impressive.”
–What do you keep in mind when acting?
“It’s important not to leave any gaps when you’re speaking. Since I first recorded the voice of Okurikara, I’ve gotten better at producing a lower-toned voice, so I thought it would be good if I could express the cold, unapproachable feeling of him, who doesn’t want to play around with people because he lives to do his job.”
–As the sword is a successor to the Date clan, you are an old acquaintance of Shokudaikiri Mitsutada and Tsurumaru Kuninaga. Please tell us your impressions of each of them.
「燭台切は、すごく上手に大倶利伽羅をいなしますよね（笑）。手の内を読まれている感じがするので、すごいなと思います。多面的に物事を見ることができる大人だと感じているので、彼みたいな人間がいるから、大倶利伽羅という刀を本丸のみんなから理解される助けになっているのだと思います。いわゆる伊達の刀達にとって、燭台切は重要な存在だと思います。鶴丸国永は、性格が正反対なんですよね。絡むことは少ないんですけど、ただ何となく大倶利伽羅の考えていることは理解されているのかなと思っています。そう考えると、大倶利伽羅はみんなから察されている人間なのかもしれないですね。あくまで僕個人の見解ですが（笑）。」
ーー最後に、公開を楽しみにしているファンに向けて、メッセージをお願いします。
「僕が『刀剣乱舞』のアニメーション作品で注目しているのは、史実に刀剣たちが送り出された場合、どんな反応が起こるんだろうということなんです。アニメ『虚伝』では織田信長に関する物語でしたけど、今回も武将と刀剣男士たちのクロスオーバーが描かれているので、それを楽しんでいただけたらと思います。しかも『々伝』は、アニメ『虚伝』の前日譚になるので、改めてを振り返ったりしながら両方楽しんでいただけたら嬉しいです。」
