Anime song singer Minami Kuribayashi held her first acoustic live show, “Minami Kuribayashi Marontic Night 2024,” at Billboard Live Yokohama in Kanagawa on Saturday, August 3rd.
In 2023, Minami Kuribayashi held the “Minami Kuribayashi LIVE TOUR 2023 “voicetrajectory””, which toured all 47 prefectures in Japan over a period of about three months, and it was a huge success. Her first solo live performance in about eight months since the final performance was not only held on the day of the 23rd anniversary of her musical career, but it was also her first live performance with an acoustic arrangement, attracting a lot of attention.
When the show started, the venue slowly went dark as the digital single “Natsu no Sei Janai” released on Tanabata last year played, and the band members Mari Sasaki (Pf&Key), Masayoshi Eguchi (Gt), Isamu Takita (Ba), and Yuko Takahashi (Perc) appeared. The opening song was “Rain Rain,” a song composed before their debut and included in their fourth album “dream link.” As the double bass began to play the intro, Kuribayashi appeared on stage in an elegant lavender dress, and the live show began in earnest. The pure, unrequited love song, depicting the confusion and excitement of falling in love for the first time, announced the arrival of a sparkling summer, and the audience naturally began clapping.
After singing the first song, she announced that this day was her 23rd debut anniversary, and voices of “Congratulations” rang out from all over the venue. After receiving a lot of applause, she expressed her gratitude, saying, “It’s an important day for me, so I’m very happy to be able to spend it with everyone,” and moved on to “Aimai♪Moment,” a song from her ninth album, “LEAP,” released last August. She entertained the audience with a special arrangement that could only be heard on this day, and announced that the band’s name had been decided as “Marron Glacé,” and revealed that “I learned from Takita that it means eternal love,” and introduced the band members. Next, she launched into the “Kimi Nozomu Medley,” saying, “Since this is the day that ‘Kimi ga Nozomu Eien’ was released into the world, I would like to play this song.”
In her debut song “Precious Memories,” which brings back memories of the summer 23 years ago, she sings the phrase “I will shine in this heart forever” in a relaxed manner, and in the opening theme song for the game, “Kaze no Yukue,” her sad voice spreads with a band sound full of speed, as if driven by the restlessness and passion of youth. In addition, she performed two songs that she wrote and composed herself: “Issho ni Itai ne,” the image song for the main heroine, Haruka Suzumiya, for whom she is the voice actress, and “eternity,” the ending theme for the OVA “Kimi ga Nozomu Eien ~Next Season~.” The time continued to allow us to fully enjoy her charm as a singer-songwriter as well as an anime song singer.
In “Believe yourself,” which was led by the words “Next, let’s do an exige song,” she showed off her diverse musicality and deep vocal expression. “Believe yourself,” the ending theme song for the TV anime “IGPX,” was released as a unit with Takahashi Chiaki called exige. The song was rearranged from the original slow ballad to a city pop song with an urban groove. Takahashi’s part was also sung loudly, and she also performed a fake over an electric guitar solo. In “Mermaid Princess” and “Deep Blue Forest,” which she said in the MC later, “I’ve written many different songs, but I tried to express the darkness in the human heart,” a dark world of loneliness and sadness appeared, as if sinking into the depths of the heart. Her piano-based singing voice was dynamic and powerful, and the sense of realism that comes from the closeness of the stage and the audience in an acoustic live performance was overwhelming.
After the MC said, “Maybe we should make the next song more cheerful,” the atmosphere changed completely. During “Kokoronokakegoto,” the audience clapped along to her uplifting voice, and during “Marron na Mutual Love,” a song from her latest album that expresses her feelings for her fans, whom she calls her “chestnut family,” she moved around the stage, singing as if making eye contact with each audience member, and delivered a straightforward message of gratitude for meeting them, saying, “Thank you for finding me.”
Before the last number, she greeted the audience, saying, “I’m very happy to be able to sing in such a wonderful place today.” Looking back on her first acoustic live performance at Billboard, she said, “Challenging new things teaches me things I didn’t know, and I think it’s wonderful. When I decided to pursue my songs, I felt excited that I could pursue them as far as I could. I’ll do my best to be able to do another acoustic live performance. Please watch over me.” She also said the famous line, “Life is training!” Then she performed “Nijiiro no Eien,” an original song from her own radio show, which contains her feelings for her fans. Starting with “The dazzling summer when we first met,” she shared with the audience the phrase that connects the past, present, and future, “10 years from now, 20 years from now…/I hope we can be together even beyond that,” and the live ended in a gentle and warm atmosphere. After exchanging “Marron poses,” she promised to
meet again and left the stage with a smile and a wave.
