Animate Times is running a series of interviews with staff and main cast members to coincide with the broadcast. In the ninth installment, we have Yoshimasa Hosoya, who plays Ryuji Nojima!
Ryuji is one of the main male characters other than the main character, Ikaruga Natsuo, played by Ono Kensho, and there are many scenes in which he interacts with Natsuo.
This time, we will be talking about episodes 4 and 5, in which Natsuo and Ryuji were particularly active, and about his impressions of playing Ryuji again in the anime. We hope you will take a look at the story so far and get excited about what’s to come.
–First of all, I’d like you to tell us as much as you remember about recording the game.
Yoshimasa Hosoya (voice of Ryuji Nojima) (hereafter, Hosoya): I think it was a recording in a unique studio that I haven’t been to often. From the ground, it looks like a one-story building, but it was actually on the second floor, and we recorded in the studio on the other side. This was ANIPLEX.EXE’s first work, so the staff there happily told me that it was the first game they had made there that day.
The TV anime story focuses on Natsuo and Atoli, but the game has stories that delve deeper into each character, and when I read the scenario, I got the impression that the story was well-put-on, and that it was a work that they were confident in and wanted to promote.
At the time there was no talk of an anime adaptation, but after the recording was over we did talk about how it would be great if it could be made into an anime.
-What are your impressions of the story and worldview of this work?
Hosoya: I was able to see some of the finished footage during the post-recording and when recording the promotional video featuring Natsuo and Atori (this interview was conducted before the anime aired), and I noticed that they put a lot of effort into not only the character design, but also the way the scenery was drawn.
I think the attention to detail in the depictions of the scenery and backgrounds is due to the confidence they have in the world view and story, and I also feel that they want fans of the original game to be able to enjoy the game with peace of mind.
–What was your impression of Ryuji, playing him again in the anime?
細谷：竜司はやんちゃで不良っぽい雰囲気を持っているのですが、本当に不良と言うわけではなく、自分はいわゆる現場で叩き上げられたタイプで、夏生のようなエリートではない事とか、自分たちの住む島は本土に比べて弱い立場に置かれていてるとか、そんな状況に拗ねているし、恵まれている本土の人たち（夏生）に対する反骨精神とか、競争心から、アンチテーゼみたいなものを態度で示しはするけれど、それを理由に他人を攻撃するような人ではなくて、自分が大事に思っている仲間や友達には優しいんですけど、それを素直に表現する事はしたがらない。そういう意味では器用ではないというか、あんなふうに不良っぽく振る舞わないと存在できないシャイな一面があるキャラクターという印象でした。
――演じる際に気を付けた部分、ゲームから変わった部分はありましたか？
細谷：夏生を小野賢章くんが演じることがゲームから一番変化したところだと思います。
夏生は先生だし、周囲のキャラクターより落ち着いた雰囲気を纏っているから、それを邪魔しないように、竜司は未熟で青くというか、夏生よりも小さい人物に見えるようにしたいと思っていました。
竜司は島の仲間たちの間ではリーダー的なポジションだけど、夏生と対峙した時にそうであってはいけないというか。竜司が未熟で少し愚かに見えれば、夏生の精神的に成熟している感じや、ロボットであるアトリを人間と対等に見ようとする、夏生の高い精神性が見えやすいだろうなと。
――先ほど小野さんのお名前があがりましたので、声が付いた夏生の印象も掘り下げさせてください。
細谷：賢章君が夏生役を務めることは、WEBニュースで知りました。
賢章君の持つ雰囲気や声音、空気感は他に無いと思いますし、色々な受け取り方ができる、奥行きがあるお芝居が素敵な演者さんだと感じています。賢章君が夏生を演じることでこの作品はTVアニメというより実写的な雰囲気になったと思うし、個人的にですが作品に箔がついた気がしました。
賢章くんの持つ雰囲気と、アトリ役の赤尾さんの持つ雰囲気の違いが、人間とアンドロイドの質感の違いを自然に印象付けている感じがして、いいなと感じます。
――ありがとうございます。スタッフ陣からのディレクションで印象に残ったものもお聴かせください。
細谷：音響監督の明田川仁さんとのやり取りが印象に残っています。仁さんの現場では、身体が大きいとか、強くて落ち着いた大人の役を振られることが多いので、竜司のような若い役を振られることが珍しかったんですね。だから頑張ろうと思って。でも最初のアフレコでテストが終わった後に、「どうした細谷?!」と（笑）。
何だか、無理があったんでしょうね（笑）。
