Kyomoto’s voice actress Mizuki Yoshida and director Kiyotaka Oshiyama take to the stage to commemorate the release of “Look Back”! They talk about behind-the-scenes stories from the production and dubbing”Look Back,” written by Tatsuki Fujimoto, was released on the comic distribution site “Jump+” in July 2021 and recorded over 2.5 million views on the first day. The theatrical anime version of the work has been released in theaters nationwide since Friday, June 28, 2024.

On Sunday, August 4th, a special stage greeting was held at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya to celebrate the release of the film. Mizuki Yoshida, who voiced Kyomoto in the film, and director Kiyotaka Oshiyama appeared on stage.

He talks about the appeal of this work, including behind-the-scenes stories from the production and dubbing.

“Look Back”, a theatrical animation adaptation of manga artist Tatsuki Fujimoto’s passionate youth story, is now showing nationwide! The film was released on Friday, June 28th and has attracted 840,000 viewers, grossing over 1.4 billion yen, and is showing no signs of stopping as the number of theaters showing the film continues to expand.

A stage greeting was held today, August 4th, with Yoshida Mizuki, who plays Kyomoto, and director Oshiyama Kiyotaka taking to the stage.

“Look Back” recently surpassed 840,000 viewers, and word of mouth on social media continues to spread rave reviews from celebrities from all walks of life and audiences who have already seen it.

Regarding the reaction after the release, Yoshida said joyfully, “Actually, I secretly went to the theater twice to watch the movie, and it was great to experience everyone there, and to be able to feel the atmosphere of the theater with me. Once again, I feel really happy that so many people are able to see it. I even bought some merchandise! I won a Kyomoto and a Fujino badge each, and did a fist pump.”

Oshiyama continued, “I’m really happy. Word of mouth has spread and a lot of people have come to see it. Of course, I think the power of the original work is a big factor, and we worked hard on making the movie, but I really feel like I’m seeing opinions about it in all sorts of places. I think the rate at which people who watch it write reviews is really high, and that makes me happy.”

The director, who actually met with the original author, Fujimoto Tatsuki, yesterday, said, “Apparently, Fujimoto also watched it at the cinema. The audience member sitting next to Fujimoto seemed to have broken down in tears after the screening. I don’t think the audience would have thought that Fujimoto was next to them, so they probably didn’t watch it.” He also revealed a secret story that the cast and the original author, Fujimoto Tatsuki, had secretly gone to the cinema to watch the film.

Looking back on this work, Yoshida said, “For the first time, I’ve come to like my own voice,” and this is his first attempt at voice acting. Regarding his acting as a voice actor, Yoshida said, “Until now, I didn’t have a good impression of my own voice. But thanks to being cast this time, I was able to take the time to face my own voice once again.”

Regarding the appeal of Yoshida’s voice, the director praised him, saying, “I asked him to play Kyomoto, who has many difficult scenes, but the dubbing went smoothly, so I have the impression that he is very good. He was able to handle even the subtle nuances really well in one take.”

He also revealed an episode in which he praised Yoshida for his brilliant performance as Kyomoto, saying, “Fujimoto-san is from Akita, musician Haruka Nakamura is from Aomori, and I’m from Fukushima, so we’re all from the Tohoku region. I think we naturally had a common understanding for this work, and even though Yoshida-san is from Tokyo, he had an aura that reminded me of a snowy country from the audition, so much so that I wondered if he was actually from the Tohoku region.”

Yoshida, who played the voice of the character Kyomoto, commented on the similarities between himself and Kyomoto, “Both Fujino and Kyomoto are good at drawing and are talented, but I feel like Kyomoto is never satisfied with his drawing. I think that’s a part of me that’s similar to him. When I’m acting, I always give it my all, but I’m not super confident and there are times when I get worried. I think that’s where we’re similar.” He revealed that he felt the commonalities between himself and Kyomoto while dubbing the film.

Furthermore, when asked about people he looked up to as a student, just like Kyomoto looked up to Fujino, the director replied, “When I was in elementary school, I used to read the Dragon Ball comics so much that I got calluses on my eyes, and I looked up to Akira Toriyama. In elementary school, I didn’t do as much as Kyomoto, but I used to copy a lot in my sketchbook.”It seems that he used to copy in his sketchbook just like Kyomoto and Fujino, and he was particular about the pictures he copied, such as choosing ones that had the whole body in them to copy, and so on, talking about how he had been drawing since he was a child.

Finally, Yoshida said, “I’m looking forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing how you all felt about the film today. I also felt this when I watched the film, but I think that the story and illustrations are fantastic more than anything else. Reading everyone’s comments, I think that the more you watch it, the more you will discover things in the film that I hadn’t noticed before, and things that are different from the manga, so I hope you will enjoy watching it over and over again.”
