At Animate Times, we have been reviewing songs from the series since its inception, and this time, Ishibashi from the editorial department will be in charge again. Thank you! Of course, we will be reviewing all the songs for seven consecutive months!
In this second installment of the series, we will review “.MAD TRIGGER CREW” by the Yokohama Division’s “MAD TRIGGER CREW,” which will be released on Wednesday, July 24, 2024.
MAD TRIGGER CREW will use any means to achieve their goal. They used a lot of violence, power, and force, and thought they were gradually moving towards the world they were pursuing. Yes, that’s what they “thought.”
However, that alone did not solve anything. So what path did they choose?
The name of Samatoki Aohitsugi’s new song is “Backbone.” This is another cool song!
Recently, Samatoki Aohitsugi has been showing off a different side of himself, such as singing and playing the guitar, but it made me realize that nothing has changed at all. In fact, he has gotten even more powerful than that.
It has a Japanese feel to it, and is a cool track that is reminiscent of a Japanese yakuza. This is the perfect example of a calm, relaxed, grown-up feel.
The title of the song is “Backbone”, which literally means “backbone”. Therefore, I think the lyrics also contain the phrase “No one can break my backbone, I will never bend my way of life.”
I’m going to straighten my back, puff out my chest, and live my life. I’m not going to bend my core. I can sense that strong will.
On the other hand, “Backbone” is a hip-hop term that also means “background.” It is a word that describes one’s upbringing and the past one has carried with them. If you read the lyrics while taking that meaning into account, you’ll feel something a little different.
“I don’t know the number of stars, but I’ve known more pain than that. That day is burned into my mind. People take the past too lightly.”
He doesn’t pretend that the painful past never happened, but carries it with him. I think this is a conviction that Samatoki has always held. A man who doesn’t waver is really cool, isn’t he…?
However, this time it’s a little different…!
<There is light even in this dirty town. Do you still want to stay here?> <The bond between friends and Hama grows stronger> <This scenery will change someday. The people beside me will be the same.>
The bond between Hama and his friends will grow stronger!? The people beside him are the same, right!? Could this be Iruma, Jyuto, Busujima, Mason, and Riou?!
Up until now, we’ve been teaming up because of our mutual interests, but now MAD TRIGGER CREW has finally become a real team…! Well, I always thought that everyone worked well together in a strange way…!
But even so, it’s really hot. It’s a very hot development.
What would happen if the MAD TRIGGER CREW, who had been fighting individually, started sharing their pasts and working together as friends…? This is crazy…!
The final lyrics include their usual style, “Get rid of any shy people right now, we’re the MAD TRIGGER CREW,” so it seems they have decided to move on to the next step while still making use of their strengths so far.
We may be witnessing the moment when the story really starts to move forward…!
Cypress Ueno, who wrote the lyrics for Samatoki Aohitsugi’s first solo song, “G anthem of Y-CITY,” will once again be in charge of the lyrics.
Cypress Ueno, who comes from a housing complex called Dream Heights in Yokohama, is a very interesting guy, a rapper and an extreme hip-hop head.
That’s why I think that, like the lyrics of “Backbone,” there will be some clever hip-hop material slipped into “Hypnosis Mic.”
Also, when it comes to Yokohama, my personal favorites are OZROSAURUS, Cypress Ueno, and Roberto Yoshino.
There is no doubt that there are lyrics that could only be written by someone who knows the inside and out of Yokohama. That realism is what increases the resolution of “Hypnosis Mic.”
“Backbone” was composed and arranged by Foux, one of the most notable producers today.
In 2023 alone, he has produced a variety of works with popular artists, including OZworld’s “Gear 5 feat. ACE COOL & Ralph” and BAD HOP’s “TOKYO DOME CYPHER,” too many to list here.
He actively introduces the songs he has been involved in on his Instagram, so if you’re interested, be sure to check it out!
