“Yorishige is like a mother to Tokiyuki, while Sadamune is like a father, standing between him and encouraging him to grow.” Part 6 of the TV anime “The Prince Who Runs Away” series: Interview with Aoyama Jo, who plays Ogasawara Sadamune, and Yamamoto Takahiro, who plays Ichikawa SukefusaThe historical spectacle manga “Nigejou no Wakakuni” by popular author Matsui Yusei, who is also the creator of “Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro” and “Assassination Classroom”, has been adapted into a TV anime. It has been airing on TOKYO MX, BS11 and other stations since July 2024. The protagonist of this work is Hojo Tokiyuki, who lost everything due to a rebellion by Ashikaga Takauji, a trusted shogunate official. Tokiyuki flees to Suwa, where he meets friends and overcomes the difficulties that come his way by “running away” and “surviving”.

Animate Times is running a series of interviews that delves deeper into the appeal of this work! In the sixth installment, we spoke with Aoyama Jo, who plays Ogasawara Sadamune, and Yamamoto Takahiro, who plays Ichikawa Sukefusa. During the interview, the two had a lively conversation and exuded a sense of “good teamwork” just like Sadamune and Sukefusa. This time, in addition to talking about the work, we also spoke to the two about voice acting.

-First, please tell us your thoughts when you read the original work.

Aoyama Jo, voice of Ogasawara Sadamune (hereafter Aoyama): In my generation, historical stories are dark, stiff, and difficult to get into. However, this work doesn’t have any of those high walls, and the story flows right into me.

In addition, I thought it was interesting that this work had a refreshing feeling of a child named Tokiyuki defeating and beating adults. Tokiyuki is the complete opposite of what our generation imagines a warlord to be, including his personality of not being good at fighting. Yamamoto-san, who is of the same generation, must understand this feeling, right?

Takahiro Yamamoto (role of Ichikawa Sukefusa): No, we’re not from the same generation (laughs)! Aoyama-san is a senior actor, isn’t he?

Aoyama: What are you talking about? When we think of “Weekly Shonen Jump,” we think of things like “Circuit Wolf” and “Dr. Toilet,” right?

Yamamoto: Sorry, I’m from the “Fist of the North Star” generation (laughs). But in terms of “Weekly Shonen Jump,” I was a little surprised that this was my gateway into historical works.

Aoyama: Moreover, even though it’s a shonen manga, there are some slightly grotesque depictions, such as heads being torn off. But I felt that if we didn’t depict those scenes carefully, the atmosphere of the era in which Tokiyuki lives wouldn’t be conveyed.

Yamamoto: That’s true. Still, as Aoyama-san said, it’s easy to read without being too dark. I think that’s due to Matsui-sensei’s humorous style. It’s based on historical facts, but it doesn’t feel stuffy, so it was very easy to read. There are some difficult words, but I was able to read it easily, so it was also educational.

— The characters you two will be playing this time, Sadamune and Sukefusa, are quirky yet lovable characters, typical of Mr. Matsui. What are your impressions of each character?
