Perhaps because it was just the three of them, they ended up talking about how cute Mutsumi is, but the second half of the interview also revealed how well the cast members get along with each other and the reasons for that.
–What did you think after acting in the role for one season and then watching the anime?
Hondo Kaede (hereinafter, Hondo): Based on the atmosphere of the original work, I thought it was a perfect fit for the 5pm Sunday slot. There are some intense action scenes and serious parts, but the basis is family love and kindness. The animation touch makes use of the original work and is easy to watch, and the action scenes are cool and I was amazed at how fast they move. Each character in the Yozakura family takes different actions, but I thought it was amazing how well they were portrayed.
Also, the highlight is that Goliath appears in every episode, and the original author Hitsuji Gonpei’s original illustration “This Week’s Goliath” is drawn to make the most of Goliath’s cuteness. Personally, that was the end of the set, and I was always looking forward to it (laughs).
The dubbing progressed at the same time as I was watching the anime, and I think it was great that I was able to see the finished anime and give feedback on how I might try to portray Mutsumi in a more detailed way.
–It’s easier to visualize the footage when you can see it.
Reiji Kawashima (hereafter Kawashima): Regarding the recording, the production team included the locations in the original manga, and for example, when recording the second episode, they included footage of the first episode’s audio. Since this work was recorded in separate locations, it was very helpful to have it made it easy to understand, like, “Oh, I see, this is what the family’s voices sound like.”
Also, as Ede-chan (Hondo) said, I was able to make adjustments by watching the actual anime, so I was able to make adjustments gradually, keeping in mind that it was a 5pm anime.
–Specifically, what adjustments did you make?
Kawashima: For example, I wonder if the gags should be played out on a larger scale. Also, I think that each episode of “The Great Operation Yozakura-san” was divided into easy-to-watch packages. I feel like it was made with the intention of being able to watch it at 5pm on Sundays and finish it feeling good.
By the way, have you been able to record together recently?
Katsuyuki Konishi (hereafter, Konishi): Due to schedule issues, we couldn’t record together. That’s why we recorded in separate groups.
Kawashima: Recently, there was an episode where I didn’t have any family on the main line, and I was the only member of Hinagiku (an intelligence agency directly under the government) (laughs).
Konishi: So, compared to recording a work where we all record together, the overall flow of the story doesn’t really flow as well.
–When you record in a group, you only dub the scenes where the characters speak.
Konishi: I’ve read the script so I understand the story, but it hasn’t really become clear to me yet, so in that sense I’m looking forward to it airing.
Motodo: I totally understand that.
Konishi: You can watch it with a fresh feeling.
Kawashima: What’s more, even though they don’t appear in the original work, you can sense the production team’s desire to include a little bit of the family in the anime.
–Thanks to the efforts of various staff members, you were able to understand the voices of your co-stars, so the anime was finished without any sense of incongruity. Looking back on the first season, can you tell us your favorite scene?
Kawashima: I like the episode where Niba Neechan (voiced by Kito Akari) is constantly being scared by Kyoichiro-san. I think it’s cute how Niba Neechan gets scared of ghosts. (Episode 11)
Konishi: That’s cute, isn’t it?
Kawashima: Also, the part about cheating in the bath was good (Episode 10).
小西：切崎殺香（伊瀬茉莉也）を助けようとして、太陽が裸で覆いかぶさってたところに、凶一郎が来るシーンね。
川島：そうです。そこで拷問器具が出てくるっていう。
――第11話だと、スパイライセンス試験もありましたね。
川島：星降月夜役の福山潤さんがめちゃめちゃ面白かったんですよ。
小西：面白かった。どこまで本気なのかわからないっていう芝居が上手だよね。
本渡：絶妙でした。
川島：終わり方もアドリブで終わったんです。「太陽と月で抱き合うんだー」みたいな。
小西：あれ、アドリブだったんだ！（笑）。
川島：セリフにはなかったと思います。なるほど、太陽と月ね！って思いました。
小西：でも、川島くんもアドリブが結構多いんですよ。何で多いかというと、ほかのキャラクターが前に出ているシーンでも、裏でお芝居を続けているからなんです。その姿勢がすごく素敵だなと思って。それによって奥深さというか、リアル感が増すんですよね。そういうことをする人ってあまりいないなと思って。
川島：（嬉しそうに）ホントですか！
小西：どうしても自分のカットでやめちゃう人が多いからね。でも、そこは入れたほうが臨場感が出るし。
川島：画面外でも、凶一郎兄さんとわちゃわちゃしたくて。
――でも別録りだから、川島さんが入れたものに、小西さんが合わせて重ねていくわけですよね。
小西：そうです。基本的に僕のキャラクター自体、アドリブとかは入れないんですけど、太陽と絡んでいるところでは、追いかけ回したりとかしているんです。太陽と六美に関しては、結構いろいろ言えると思うので（笑）。
川島：六美へのアドリブも結構多いですもんね（笑）。
本渡：私、凶一郎兄ちゃんとりんの会話でピー音が入るところが好きです（第8話）。
小西：アフレコのとき何て言ってたんだっけ？
川島：SE（エスイー）して、SEして、SE、SE、SEかな。

本渡：台本に書いてあるまま、読まれていました。
小西：そうそう。何かで埋めようかなと思ったんだけど、文章にならないと思ったから諦めたんです。
あと、僕が一番好きな六美は、エンディングに出てくるドット絵の六美。
川島：あれ！ めちゃめちゃかわいいですよね。
本渡：等身大のやつですね。
小西：あの六美はすごくかわいいんですよね。マジでかわいいんです！
川島：間違いないです。
――ドットになってまで、かわいい六美。
川島：粗くてもかわいい。
小西：歌を飛ばさずにずっと見ていられるんですよ（笑）。今日も六美はかわいいな〜と思いながら。
――役に引っ張られてか、お二人とも六美が大好きになっているわけですね（笑）。
小西：大好きですね。あと、僕が一番好きな六美は、四怨（CV.悠木碧）と太陽がゲームやらなければいけなくて、その横で旗持ってハチマキをしながら、「頑張れ〜」って応援してる六美が超かわいいです（第6話）。
本渡：ハチマキ六美は、スタンプにもありますからね。
小西：「いいな〜、応援されて」って思いながら。そうすると太陽や川島くんへの当たりが強くなっちゃうんですよね。
川島：じゃあ、僕の一番好きな六美もいいですか？ 僕は、ギャグ泣き顔の六美が好きっすね。最初のところだと、牛乳を渡して、「わたしが……ぎゅうにゅう……」って泣いているところとか。あと「離婚しましょう…!!!」のところとか。そこのえーでちゃんのお芝居も含めてめっちゃかわいくて、好きだなぁ。
小西：六美は儚そうだけど、芯がしっかりしてて、とっても強い女性なのがすごく素敵だなと思っているんです。だから、守ってあげたいなと思うんですよね。
川島：あと、頑張りすぎているところもいいですよね。
本渡：私が個人的に思う、一番好きな六美は……。
小西：好きな凶一郎兄さんでもいいんだよ？（笑）。
本渡：……。えー、好きな六美は、病院に潜入するときに太陽と変装して行ったんですけど、姿だけでなく声もおじいちゃんおばあちゃんになっているんです（第13話）。ただ、それは変声機を使っているのか、地声でやっているのか、どっちですか？と現場で確認したら「自分たちで」ということだったんです。なので演じている私たちも楽しかったですし、バレないしって感じの六美もかわいかったです。活き活きしていました。
小西：2人で楽しそうにしていたもんね。老後になってもこんな感じになるんだろうなっていうのが想像できて良かったですよね。
本渡：あと、もうひとつ、一番好きな六美は、歌がすごく下手なところ（第16話）。「ボエ〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜〜」って。
小西：兄弟全員怯えているっていう（笑）。
――せっかくなので、好きな凶一郎兄さんも教えていただけますか？
本渡：え……、好きな凶一郎兄ちゃんは、タンポポの潜水艦を倒しに行くときに、水中で魚雷に平然と乗って、シュッと破壊してそのまま戻ってくるところがカッコ良かったです（14話）。
小西：絞り出して、そこみたいです（笑）。
本渡：でも、基本目が開かないじゃないですか。開く瞬間を見たいですね。
川島：開けさせたいね。
――凶一郎は裏でカッコいいところがいいですよね。
川島：第2期のOPを見たんですけど、そこで出てくる凶一郎兄さんがめっちゃ良かったです。
小西：太陽だからこそわかるところだね。
川島：なるほど、強い！と。この愛に勝てるのか？と。
小西：言っても六美も凶一郎とは兄妹ですから、太陽に対しては狂気的な愛になることもありますからね。
本渡：そこは血ですね。
小西：同じ家系の人だなっていうのはすごく感じる。あと、モールス信号で会話できるのも面白かったよね（第5話）。
本渡：3人で、教室でのシーンですね。
川島：友達の子供が、凶一郎が黒板でモールス信号を打っているところで、延々に笑っているみたいなんですよ。あそこ、子供に刺さるシーンだったみたいですよ。
小西：へ〜。小気味が良かったからかな。
――子供でも笑顔で見られるのが、日5作品の良いところですね。
小西：全体的に温かいところが良いですよね。テーマは家族愛だったりもするので。ストレートだろうが歪んでいようが、人それぞれ違いますけど、家族を愛しているからこそのところはありますので。
