Recently, there have been many anime works that depict people who want to express something. Works that have appeared around the same time include “Look Back,” which depicts two girls who aspire to be manga artists, “A Few Minutes of Cheers,” which depicts a high school boy who is passionate about making music videos and a woman who has given up on her musical career, and TV anime such as “Girls Band Cry” and “Nighttime Jellyfish Can’t Swim,” which focus on musical activities.
These works are a mixture of the joys and pains of creation, and many of them are highly passionate works that are imbued with the strong feelings of the creators who are themselves creators.
“A Few Minutes of Cheers” is the first feature-length anime by the video production team “Hurray!”, which has attracted attention for its music videos for Yorushika. The team, consisting of Popurika, Ohajiki, and Magotsuki, teamed up with Tohki Hanada, who has written the scripts for popular works such as “Sound! Euphonium”, and the whole series is imbued with a fresh sense of craftsmanship.
The protagonist, Asaya Kanata, is a high school boy who is passionate about making music videos. One day, he meets a woman performing on the street in the rain, and is inspired to make a music video. However, the woman turns out to be Orishige Yu, a teacher who will be arriving at Kanata’s school the next day. Orishige has already given up on his musical career, and says he cannot grant Kanata’s request to make a music video. A boy who is single-minded about his passion, and an adult whose dreams have been shattered by the wall of reality. This work depicts the ideals and reality of manufacturing from two perspectives.
Seeing Kanata forge ahead toward his dreams will give you the push you need to start something yourself. On the other hand, I think that people who once gave up on the dreams they were chasing will sympathize with Orie-sensei. While this is a powerful work that depicts the passion to never give up on making things, it also has a warm gaze towards those who have given up, and it is impressive that the content gives the strength to chase your dreams again.
This work seems to be a work that is full of the creators’ real feelings, as it depicts a boy who dreams of making his own music video, created by the three members of Hurray!, who have worked on many music videos. Making a music video is a mundane task that involves constantly sitting in front of a computer, but it involves extraordinary conflict and effort, which are depicted with the dynamic expression that only animation can provide. The scene where Kanata magically issues control commands in a vast space and draws in characters and backgrounds is filled with the excitement of creating something.
Furthermore, this work is a full CG animation created entirely in Blender, aiming for a visual style that sets it apart from traditional Japanese animation, making it a work that gives a sense of new life.
