Sawano Hiroyuki has worked on numerous anime soundtracks, including “Mobile Suit Gundam UC,” “Blue Exorcist,” “Attack on Titan,” “Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress,” and “Only I Level Up.” While his soundtracks generally contain a lot of vocals, SawanoHiroyuki[nZk] is a collection of vocal tracks only, making it an irresistible project for fans of his worldview.
And what I felt after listening to this best album again is that it is consistently cool. They release a wide range of music genres, from band arrangements to EDM, but they all pursue coolness. The lead song from the 5th album “V”. ASKA, who Sawano himself has publicly stated is an artist he respects and has had a great influence on, is featured on the song as a guest vocalist, and Sawano himself commented, “This is a song that will continue to push me forward and that I want to cherish forever.” The lyrics were written by ASKA. The world view matches Sawano’s grandiose music. The song talks about the beauty of the earth and its future, and I was touched by the words, “If we continue to convey kindness, there will be no war.” This is a song that made me tremble at the greatness of ASKA, the vocalist who can sing such deep lyrics so strongly and warmly.

The opening theme for the TV anime “No Guns Life” is a hard-boiled science fiction story about the exploits of the main character, Juzo Inui, whose head is a giant gun. Vocals and lyrics are handled by Jean-Ken Johnny of MAN WITH A MISSION. This dance rock song has an intro that builds up a sense of anticipation as you don’t know what’s going to happen next, an exhilarating chorus that explodes from the bridge, and straightforward vocals that make it irresistibly cool.

Yorushika is a groovy electro song by composer n-buna and vocalist suis. n-buna also participates on guitar, creating funky sounds. Suis’s vocals, which are casual, cool and stylish, show a different charm to Yorushika’s. I think Yorushika’s lyrics are conscious of conveying the words in Japanese, but this song has a lot of English lyrics, which gives it a rough feel. I think that’s what makes it so fresh.

It’s like putting AINA THE END’s unique and wonderful vocals on Sawano’s sound, and before you know it, you’re absorbed in the song, wondering what kind of scenery will appear when two different personalities collide. 作詞も岡崎体育が担当。ファンキーなロックサウンドが、力強く真っすぐな岡崎体育のボーカルの良さを引き出している。後半のシンガロングできるパートを、ライブでみんなで歌ったら爽快だろう。コミカルな岡崎がまったく出てこないのかと思いきや、MVの最後で、しっかり澤野と一緒に踊っているので、やはり期待は裏切らないエンターテイナーだ。

シンガーソングライターReNをゲストボーカルに迎えての楽曲。ギターのアルペジオから静かに始まり、そこからボーカル、ピアノと音が重なっていく。洋楽っぽく聴こえるのは、ReNのボーカルが成せる技でもあるだろう。英詞だけでなく、日本語詞も多いのだが、それを感じないほどグルーヴィだし、途中で曲の雰囲気がガラッと変わっても、軸のブレない素晴らしい歌声を響かせている。

シンガーソングライター優里が歌うのは、アニメ『キルラキル』の劇中歌「Till I Die」のリアレンジ「Till I」。バラードだが、最初の美しいフェイクで心をグッとつかまれるし、Bメロでの声の伸び、そこからエモーショナルなサビに繋がっていく感じは唯一無二。特にラストのロングトーンの美しさと儚くさは、とてつもなく心に沁みた。

アコギのストロークから、打ち込みのリズムに乗ってカッコ良く展開されていく疾走感溢れる曲。サビのキャッチーさと開放感は澤野弘之の真骨頂だろう。そんな楽曲を大橋卓弥がどんなアプローチを見せるのか。「奏（かなで）」に代表される、切なさと哀愁漂うボーカルのイメージがあったが、新たな魅力が垣間見られて、やはり素晴らしい声質を持ったシンガーなのだと実感した。ただただカッコいいし、“wow wow”と叫びたくなる。ラストの切なく沁みる常田真太郎のピアノも聴きどころ。

TVアニメ『86—エイティシックスー』の第2クール最終話のEDテーマ。ゲストボーカルは、同作の第2クールのEDテーマ「アルケミラ」を歌っていたロックバンド、リーガルリリーのたかはしほのか。作品に寄り添って書かれたたかはしの歌詞。そして、弱さや儚さの中の強さを感じるボーカルに、澤野が生み出す繊細なメロディーとピアノの音色。すべてが合わさって大きな感動を誘う。

TVアニメ『七つの大罪 憤怒の審判』のEDテーマ。打ち込みがメインのサウンドだが、音が賑やかにしているわけではなく、シンプルな音数で、メロディーと歌のパワーを信じているサウンドメイク。それに応えて、洋楽のカヴァーで培ったグルーヴィなボーカルを響かせるReoNaもまた素晴らしい。サビで主旋律の裏でもうひとつのメロディを持ったコーラスが展開され、そのコーラスが主旋律になっていくというアレンジがカッコいい。

競馬学校で騎手を目指す少年たちの姿を描いたTVアニメ『群青のファンファーレ』のEDテーマ。OPテーマ「Move The Soul」をグローバルボーイズグループJO1が歌っていて、劇伴を澤野弘之が担当しているという縁から、JO1の河野純喜と與那城奨によるゲストボーカルが実現。澤野のボーカル曲は、基本的にカッコいいが、そのカッコ良さを完璧に表現しているというか、自分のものにしてしまっているのがすごい。タイプの違う2人のボーカルの魅力が炸裂しているし、MVでのパフォーマンスも見惚れるほどカッコ良かった。

アニメ『進撃の巨人』や映画『プロメア』のサントラに収録される歌モノでボーカルを担当していたLacoが、[nZk]に初参加した楽曲。タイトルにある「Troll」は、スラング的な意味で、ネットを荒らす人、悪目立ちする人という意味があるが、負の感情を爆発力のあるボーカルで歌っているのに、どこかおしゃれでカッコよくて上品さがある。それは澤野が生み出す音楽にも共通している。

TVアニメ『86—エイティシックスー』の第1クールEDテーマ。ゲストボーカルのmizukiは、SawanoHiroyuki[nZk]の1枚目のシングル「A/Z｜aLIEz」（TVアニメ『アルドノア・ゼロ』EDテーマ）から参加していて、澤野も楽曲コメントで「信頼するボーカル」と語っているが、表現力が豊かで深い。穏やかだが徐々に熱を帯びていくバラードで、決して軽くない歌詞のテーマだが、見事に歌い上げている。

韓国5人組ボーイグループ・TOMORROW X TOGETHERがゲストボーカルとして参加した楽曲で、TVアニメ『俺だけレベルアップな件』のOPテーマ。超常的な能力に目覚めた覚醒者は、覚醒した際に付けられたランクから成長することはないとされる中、成長を続けるハンター・水篠旬の活躍を描くアニメで、韓国の漫画が原作となる。イントロがパーカッションから始まるのが印象的で、ダンサブルなサビがカッコいい。リズムやグルーヴを意識したボーカルが何より素晴らしいし、途中にラップが入るところなどは、K-POPへのリスペクトも感じられる。

ボーナストラックとして収録されるAwichとのコラボ楽曲。日本だけでなく海外でも活躍するヒップホップの女王、Awichの圧倒的な存在感と、澤野弘之の生み出すサウンドの奥深さ。楽曲だけ聴いてもカッコいいのだが、マジック：ザ・ギャザリング『エルドレインの森』アニメーショントレーラー起用楽曲ということで、作品世界に寄り添ったAwichによる歌詞も素晴らしい。双子の宿命や物語を想像しながら聴くと、さらに深みが増すし、トレーラームービーのラストにあるショートドラマだけ見ても、曲の解像度はかなり高まる。
