This work is an adventure fantasy that depicts the protagonist, a boy named Yo, who chases after a girl named Rachel who heads to the Tower of God, where it is said that if you reach the top, you can get anything you want. He jumps into the tower and takes on numerous challenges as he gets closer to the secrets hidden within the tower.
The first episode was broadcast, depicting the world six years after the first season, and some people may have been curious about the characters of the overwhelmingly powerful “Ju Violet Grace” and “Ono Sei”, who declares that he will become the king of the tower.
So in this article, we bring you an interview with Taichi Ichikawa, who plays Ju Violet Grace, and Yuuma Uchida, who plays Sei Oono, after the first episode aired. While touching on the depth of the work, we asked them about what they were conscious of when creating their characters and their impressions of each other’s characters.

–It’s been about four years since the first season aired, and now the second season is starting. Can you tell us how you felt when the decision was made to make an anime?
Taichi Ichikawa (voice of Ju Violet Grace) (hereafter, Ichikawa): I found out that there was going to be a second season about two years ago. I was really happy at the time.
That’s because I thought the first season’s scenario was a sort of “prologue” to the Tower of God as a whole. I remember being very happy when the second season was announced just as I was thinking that I would be able to continue on from here on out, since the story was only just about to get more exciting.
–The ending of the first season was very shocking…
Ichikawa: If it had ended there, viewers would have been left feeling sad, so my wish for the anime to continue on from there has finally been fulfilled.
— Uchida-san, the character of Ouji Naru, will be making his first appearance in this series. Please tell us how you felt when you found out you would be appearing in the series.
Uchida Yuuma (Uchida), who plays Ouno Sei: The audition itself took place quite some time ago, and it was probably decided around the same time that Ichikawa-kun heard about the decision to have a second season.
After it was decided, I was excited to wait for the anime to start, but since the atmosphere had already been created in the first season, I was excited to join in the second season. However, as everyone knows, something terrible happened at the end of the first season…
Everyone: (laughs).
Uchida: When I got to the set, not many of the cast members from the first season were there, and I wondered what had happened… (laughs).
Ichikawa: Really (laughs).
Uchida: I think the viewers were also shocked by the end of the first season. A lot of time has passed in the story, so I thought it would be nice to create the atmosphere of the second season of “Tower of God” from scratch. Maybe because of that, I remember being able to act without feeling too nervous.
–So, please tell us about the inner aspects of the characters you play and what you kept in mind while acting.
市川：僕が演じるビオレは、「誰とも強い関わりを持たないように生きていこう」という気概を感じる生き方をしているので、冒頭は本当に心を閉ざしていまして。だからなるべく、人に対する興味関心を殺し“無”になるところから役作りを始めました。
お芝居は会話がメインなので、普段は投げかけられたものを返していくんですけど、今回はそのキャッチボールを放棄して他人に対する関心を全て切り捨てていく作業を頑張りました。
内田：王野は（ビオレとは）対照的な感じで、いろんな人と交流もするし、ちょっと言葉遣いとか風貌も相まってやんちゃな感じもしますが、根の部分は結構真面目で熱く善良な部分もあるので、すごく優しいところもあったりします。
ですが、塔に登るとなった時に、その甘さを捨てなければいけなかったり、自分の中の優しさと非情にならないといけない部分のぶつかり合いの合間で、ぐぬぬとなる瞬間もあるんです。
市川：（頷く）
内田：物語が始まってからは「行くんだ、俺は上に！」という意志で前に強く踏み出したりする瞬間があって、その姿が本当に泥臭いくらい先に進むんだという意志を見せてくれます。
こういうパワーがあるキャラを演じるにあたって、自分も追い付いていかないといけないというか。これは物理的な話になるんですけど、へたれないように自分自身も身体を鍛えたりしています（笑）。
王野の気持ちになるために、というよりは単純に台詞にパワーがあるので、物理的に身体にもパワーがないとできない役だなと思っていて。結構、気合を入れて臨んでいます。
――役作りのためにも、筋トレをされているんですね。
内田：以前から筋トレはしていましたが、より頑張ろうと。本当にキャラクターのパワーがすごいんです！
市川：たしかに（笑）。
内田：（王野は）声を張る瞬間も多い人なので、自分も頑張らなきゃなというのを王野を通して思いました（笑）。
――収録に関してなのですが、おふたりの収録はご一緒でしたか？
内田：結構多いよね？
市川：一緒のことが多いですね！
内田：ね！
――そうだったんですね。収録でのディレクションや印象的なエピソードがありましたらお聞かせください。
市川：先ほど、周りに対しての関心を無くしていくというお話をしましたが、お芝居をする上でつい会話をしてしまう時があるんです。ですが、そこはやっぱり冷たい感じで、「会話にならなくてもいいから、相手にしないようなニュアンスで台詞を入れてください」というディレクションを前半の方は何度か受けましたね。
内田：たしかに、ビオレは感情を見せないというか、あえて閉ざしているような人だけど、そこを表現するのはすごく難しいところなんだよね。
市川：そうなんですよね。ニュアンスを入れつつ、相手への関心も無くしていくところで、めちゃくちゃ最初の方は苦労しましたね。
内田：相手の言葉をきちんと聞いてそれに応えようとするのは、元々の市川くんの優しさでもあるよね。
市川：あはは（笑）。
内田：丁寧なアプローチをされているなと、隣で見ていて思います。
――一方、内田さんはどのようなディレクションを受けたのでしょうか？
内田：王野はもっと大きくやってほしいと。バーンっと爆発する時は爆発しても良いと、最初にディレクションをいただきました。だから「これはもう思いっきりやったほうがいいな」と、それでちょっと覚悟を決めて……体力が必要だと。
――先ほどの筋トレの話に繋がるんですね。
内田：はい。作中で起きている出来事だったりとか、やっていることが派手だったりするのですが、そういうことに対してかなりエネルギッシュな表現で演じさせていただいている感覚はありますね。
僕はあまりそういう感じのアプローチを自分から持っていくことはなくて、わりと（表現を）大きくしすぎないように考えることが多いんですけど、この作品は、特に王野に関しては、メリハリをつけて大きくガッツリ演じても良いとのことで、勢いをつける時はつけるし、しぼむ時はしぼむし、みたいな。チャレンジでもあり、楽しい部分でありつつ、頑張りどころでもありました。
――お芝居での役作りの方向性としても、真逆だったと。
市川：真逆ですね。王野は第一話のテストから本番の収録で180度くらいお芝居が変わっていた印象です。
内田：（笑）。たしかにそうですね。ニアと話す時は、ラーメンを一緒に食べたり、約束をしたりと距離感が近かったので、優しさが見えるお芝居でもいいよなと思ったんですけど、それよりはなんかこう……。
市川：「気の良いお兄ちゃん」みたいなね！
内田：そう！ もっと気さくで良いよ、と。
市川：だから、（テストを経た本番の収録で）めちゃくちゃ親しみやすくなったんです。
内田：バーンと話すけど、相手のことをそんなに気遣いすぎなくて良いよって。それが王野なりの相手とのコミュニケーションの仕方なんです。
