While the showdown between Boufuurin and Shishigashira Ren was unfolding, we conducted an interview with Yuma Uchida, who plays Haruka Sakura, and Koki Uchiyama, who plays Kyotaro Sugishita, just before the seventh episode.
Mr. Uchida and Mr. Uchiyama talk about the relationship between Haruka Sakura, Kyotaro Sugishita, and Hajime Umemiya, and Yuichi Nakamura, who plays Umemiya…? We will bring you topics that you should read before episode 9 airs!
–First of all, please tell us your impressions after reading the original work and script.
Yuma Uchida, who plays Haruka Sakura (hereinafter referred to as Uchida): I read the original story for “WIND BREAKER” when recording the PV.
I thought it would be a violent story because it was about taking the top in a fight,'' but when I opened the lid, it was a heroic story about people who fight to protect the city,” and it was a pleasant read. It’s done.
Koki Uchiyama, who plays Kyotaro Sugishita (hereinafter referred to as Uchiyama): I had a strong impression that it was a “school story” because of the cover and the atmosphere at the beginning of the story, and the fact that he was wearing a uniform.
However, when Sakura enters Furin High School (at the beginning of the story), the battle elements are stronger than the school life, and as I read the story from the first impression, I realized that the actual story I felt a gap in the development.
— Mr. Uchida plays Haruka Sakura and Mr. Uchiyama plays Kyotaro Sugishita. Please tell us your first impressions when you saw each character and what you felt inside the characters as you played them.
Uchida: I think that the part of Sakura that she shows to others and the part of her that she shows to others are not that different from what she is on the inside. Of course, she’s sometimes clumsy when it comes to communicating with the characters around her, but I feel like she’s a child whose feelings are easy to understand.
In that sense, I think that even when I’m acting, I’m able to act very straightforwardly. However, (Sakura) appears at the beginning with a rather relaxed attitude, but she also has a naive side. She thinks that she is not just a violent character, so she will play the part carefully.
–What do you think about Mr. Uchiyama?
Uchiyama: Between my first impression of Sugishita and actually playing him, there aren’t many major differences. He had the same image as his appearance.
However, when I played him, I realized that his loyalty to Hajime Umemiya'' was a major characteristic of the character. In the anime, things like Sugishita reacts to Umemiya-san’s every move even when she’s not talking” are depicted in an impressive way, so you can really see her pledging allegiance to him. It was refreshing to think that there was such a thing.
–What kind of direction did you receive during the recording?
Uchida: Sugishita…
Uchiyama: Ah, Sugishita? Sugishita doesn’t have many lines (lol).
Uchida: That’s right. I’m there, but I’m not saying a word (lol).
Uchiyama: Certainly.
Uchida: Regarding Sakura, at the time of recording, we were mostly creating the performance in a way that respected the acting that we had prepared.
どちらかというと動きの多い作品ではあるので、そういった部分に声をどうつけていくかみたいな、画とお芝居のバランスをどうやって作っていくかという所でディレクションが入るということは結構ありました。
――おふたりが演じるキャラクター（桜と杉下）は、ボウフウリン総代・梅宮一へ向ける感情が対極的（「越えたい」と「憧れ」）であるが故にお互いに相容れていない部分があるのかなぁと。そこで、桜と杉下の関係性についてどのように感じていますか？
内田：この2人ですか？ ある種、「犬猿の仲」的なところはあると思います。
似ているかと聞かれると難しいですが、一本気のような部分は近いのかもしれませんね。
桜から杉下を見ると「梅宮さんに憧れていて、その自身の気持ちに真っ直ぐになれる」というのが羨ましかったりするのかなぁ、とか。そう思ってはいますが、如何せんお互いに表面的なコミュニケーションの仕方の個性が強いので、ぶつかるのはしょうがない気もするなと（笑）。
内山：僕の感覚としては、桜が梅宮に対して多少無礼な物言いや態度をとると、杉下は逐一反応して怒りを露わにするという流れで物語が進んでいるので。
一同：（笑）。
内山：そういう意味で言うと、基本的に桜のことを良くは思っていないんだろうな。
本作の序盤で、桜と杉下の戦うシーンが少し描かれています。そういった描写に関しては、『WIND BREAKER』の話全体のテーマにもつながるかもしれませんが、「拳で語り合う」 でもあるので。
（この2人の関係が）徐々に変化していける部分もあるのかな？ というポイントがアニメの見どころにもなってくるんじゃないかなと。
――心の底からお互いを嫌っているという雰囲気ではないですよね。
内山：ええ、共闘する場面もありますし。
内田：お互いに認めている部分はありそうですよね。
――内田さんと内山さんから見て、「梅宮一」というキャラクターはどのように感じていますか？
内田：梅宮はしっかりと人のことを見ていて誰かと居るということを大切にしてる印象なんですよね。
菜園をやっていたりと「育てる」ことをかなり大切にしているなぁと思います。自分が感じてきたことや素敵だなと思うことを周りに色々な形で伝えようとしてくれる人。
そんな梅宮に響く人たちがいっぱい居て、彼の後ろに着いていくんだと。桜的には「いつもヘラヘラしやがって」という気もするんですけど、なぜだかそんな梅宮に自分も惹かれてしまうと。心に刺さる言葉をちゃんと置いてくれる一面も、ただ性格が柔らかく優しいだけじゃないところなのかなと思います。
内山：梅宮はボウフウリンのてっぺんで、物語中でも最強キャラなので「強い」イメージが先行するんですけども、人柄的には明るく朗らかで皆の心を繋いでいく。
強さでも慕われているし、皆の気持ちが暗くならないように明るく振る舞ってくれる性格の良さもあるので、どちらも兼ね備えているところが特徴的です。
戦っている場面での強さがあって、後ろに着いていきたくなる人柄もあるので、その両面で慕われるキャラだなと思います。
