In “Boarding School Edition,” 13-year-old Ciel Phantomhive and his butler Sebastian Michaelis infiltrate Weston School, one of Britain’s most prestigious boarding schools, where a strange incident has occurred.
At Animate Times, the Prefect Four (P4), who hold the key to the story, are played by Toshiki Watanabe (as Edgar Redmond), Junya Enoki (as Lawrence Brewer), Shunsuke Takeuchi (as Herman Greenhill), Interview with Tatsumaru Tachibana (role of Gregory Violet). We asked each of them about their impressions of the characters they play, and about the people in their lives they considered perfect.
――What impression did you have of the popular work “Black Butler”, which has been developed in various media mixes?
Toshiki Watanabe, who plays Edgar Redmond (hereinafter referred to as Watanabe): I originally had all the manga and watched the anime. When I first saw Black Butler, I thought, “There’s such a stylish work out there.” Personally, I like British fashion, and I felt that the worldview of Black Butler was very catchy.
–In the “Boarding School Edition”, students appear in uniforms.
Watanabe: The houndstooth pattern on those slacks is really nice. Uniforms with a classic feel are something that really stands out to me.
Junya Enoki (hereinafter referred to as Enoki) who plays Lawrence Bruer: I knew about this work even before I became a voice actor, and the line “I’m just a butler after all” left a strong impression on me. After it was decided that he would be participating in the project, he came into contact with the original work, and first of all, he felt that the illustrations were very beautiful and that it was a work that would be enjoyed by a wide range of people, regardless of gender. In particular, the “Boarding School Edition” was very interesting due to its mystery elements.
Shunsuke Takeuchi (hereinafter referred to as Takeuchi) who plays Herman Greenhill: I’m sure I’m from the generation that was directly affected by the second season of the anime. In fact, I watched both the first and second seasons of the anime, and many of my friends had also read the original work of Black Butler and watched the anime. What really shocked me at the time was the character design. It’s gorgeous, but I would say the color scheme is very chic. It’s not that the colors are so strong, but I felt that the design was very fantastic and left a lasting impression. On the other hand, the characters are rather realistic, or rather, they have some dark side. I feel very fulfilled in being able to be involved in the world of “Black Butler” as an artist.
グレゴリー・バイオレット役の橘 龍丸さん（以下、橘）：『黒執事』はきれいな世界観のなかにちょっとグロさみたいなものがある作品だと思います。シリアスパートとキャラクターたちが織り成すバラエティーに富んだ立ち回り方のメリハリが見ていて気持ちよかったですね。最初は姉の影響で見始めましたが、僕もすっかりはまってしまって。我が家では母親も見ています（笑）。それくらい老若男女問わずに楽しめる作品ですよね。
――みなさんは、名門寄宿学校ウェストン校の4人の監督生、通称P4を演じられます。それぞれのキャラクターの紹介をお願いします。
渡部：エドガーは特別高貴な人しか入れない「深紅の狐（スカーレット・フォックス）」寮の監督生で、P4のなかでも特に美しさ、きれいさが目立つキャラクターです。上品で飛びぬけてナルシストっぽいところもありますが、決してそれが嫌な感じではないんですよね。
榎木：ブルーアーは勉学が得意な「紺碧の梟（サファイア・オウル）」寮の監督生です。校則や規則にすごく厳しくて、シエルにも指摘する場面があります。ただ、演じていくうちにただ単に厳しいだけではなくて、彼なりの学校への想いや他者への優しさみたいなものも見えてきて。人を寄せ付けない冷たさを最初は感じていましたが、物語が進むにつれて段々と人間らしい人情味を感じるようになりました。そこが彼の魅力だと思っています。
武内：グリーンヒルは身体能力に優れる生徒が集まる「翡翠の獅子（グリーン・ライオン）」寮の監督生です。ブルーアーが規則・規律を大切にしているのに対して、彼はわりと倫理観やスポーツマンシップにこだわっている実直な人間。「こういう振る舞いがいいんじゃないか」という理想像がしっかりしている人物だと思います。人に対しても、自分に対しても厳しい真面目なところが彼の魅力じゃないかな。
橘：バイオレットは一芸に富んでいれば認められる「紫黒の狼（ヴァイオレット・ウルフ）」寮の監督生で、恐らくP4のなかでは一番の変人（笑）。オーディションのときからあまり声を張らずに演じていましたが、実際のアフレコでは音響監督さんから「もっと音にしなくていい、もっとやらなくていい」というディレクションがあって。僕が思っている以上に陰の要素が強いキャラクターなんだなと感じました。ただ、彼は彼なりに熱いものを持っているんです。俯瞰で周りを見ているときもあるので、意外と大人な部分もあるんですよね。でも、猪突猛進で誰よりも子供な面もあって。その瞬間、瞬間で何を考えているか分からないミステリアスなキャラクターだと思います。
