In addition, OP theme song artist Pii was keen to have a special discussion with the original author, noho. The images of the pilgrimage to the sacred places that were held at the same time have also arrived.
The cause of Niji’s chills was “throwback.” The doctor tells him to avoid the cold, but when he sees Ryo being pulled into the river where the dragon god sleeps, he jumps in without knowing where he is going. When he sees Jiro trying to save Niji by himself, Mutsumi is…
Mr. Pii rushed to Mr. noho who lives in Shizuoka Prefecture. This is actually the second time he visited the sacred place of “My Neighbor Youkai-san”, having visited when he was writing the theme song. Mr. Pii appeared with a big smile on his face, carrying shopping bags from the roadside stations Shiomizaka and Mataichi-an and eating kushikatsu (kushikatsu), which also appears in the main story.
Even though it was our first time meeting noho, who welcomed us with a gentle smile, our conversation started in a relaxed atmosphere. It talks about the surprising similarities between manga artists and musicians, how they choose the locations that appear in their stories, and even the behind-the-scenes stories behind the creation of the theme song.
–Today is the first time we met. We were talking a lot before the interview, but please tell us your impressions after actually meeting him.
Pii-san: It looks very similar to the image drawn on the icon.
noho: I get asked that a lot (lol). Mr. Pii also had the kind atmosphere I had imagined from watching him on YouTube, so I’m relieved that we’ll be able to have a fun conversation.
–Are there any points when choosing locations to appear in your manga?
noho: We choose places where the characters are likely to go. I tried to think of places in the area that was modeled for the stage that everyone would go to. For example, if we were going to go together, we would look for a kushikatsu restaurant, and what kind of kushikatsu restaurant would be good (the interview was conducted at Kumata-san, the kushikatsu restaurant that appeared in comic volume 3, p. 38/anime episode 7). “Roadside Station Shiomizaka” (appeared in Volume 3 of the comic/Episode 7 of the anime) was also an idea I came up with when I wanted a sense of driving at a place I had been to before. You can see the ocean, you can take a footbath, and if it’s sunny, it’s a very beautiful place, so I recommend it.
――Pii-san, you actually went to Shizuoka to write the theme song. Are there any places that left an impression on you or that you have fond memories of?
Mr. Pii: I did some research on the places mentioned in the afterword of Volume 1 and went to Morimachi in Enshu. The air was clear and it was very beautiful and felt good. I also visited Oguni Shrine and actually waded into the river at the shrine. It was the kind of place where the taxi drivers looked like monsters (lol). I think everyone who has read the manga or watched the anime will want to go there.
noho: I’m really happy. It was natural for me to include it in the manga because it’s a local place that I’m familiar with, but when I was drawing it, I didn’t have that in mind, but when I read the manga, I thought, “I want to go there.” I’m glad that I feel like I’m contributing to the local community in some way.
Mr. Pii: My mother watched the first episode of the anime and ordered sweets from Mataichi-an!
noho: I wonder if it contributed to sales (lol).
—Is there anything you keep in mind when recording?
Pii-san: I wanted to create a gentle worldview, so I sang it without being too strong, keeping in mind the great maternal love within me. In the orchestra, I use a sitar (a stringed instrument originating from North India, a folk instrument) to add a bit of a monster-like sound. The song was created based on the image of the manga, and when it was combined with moving images from the anime world, I felt that the song itself expanded greatly. I really like it.
noho: When I listened to the song, I got the impression that the wind was blowing. The way the wind blows that you feel when listening to the song is also expressed in the animation, and the moment when anime and music are fused, it’s the ultimate combination! I remember feeling like. I love the opening, which has such a wonderful feeling of excitement that the anime is about to begin.
