Autumn anime “You are the Underworld” Interview with Toshiki Kumagai (role of Hitoyoshi Yokotani) and Reina Ueda (role of Yuki/Shue) | Clumsy and airheaded. The cuteness of this former “assassin” maid is charmingThe TV anime “You are the Underworld” will start airing on Saturday, October 5th. Yuki, a maid, comes to the home of high school student Yokotani Hitoyoshi and asks to be hired. However, the black-haired and pure maid’s previous job was as a hitman and her special skill is assassination… Yuki ends up doing the housework as a maid in Hitoyoshi’s house, but she is a beginner at housework and is also clumsy. How will the two of them live together? “You are the Underworld” is the story of a maid who has lived alone in the underworld and gradually learns the warmth of family.

In this interview, we asked Kumagai Toshiki, who plays Yokotani Hitoyoshi, and Ueda Reina, who plays the maid Yuki/Shue, about the appeal of the work and what they pay particular attention to when acting.

–What was your impression when you read Shotan’s “Kimi wa Meido-sama.” (currently serialized in Shogakukan’s “Sunday Webry”)?

Toshiki Kumagai (hereinafter, Kumagai): Yuki’s innocent nature and Hitoyoshi’s willingness to compromise. I often found myself laughing at their misunderstandings, but there were also moments when Hitoyoshi’s kindness moved Yuki’s heart, and I thought it was a really heartwarming work.

Reina Ueda (hereinafter, Ueda): I also felt a warm, heartwarming feeling. It’s really wonderful that the warmth is at the base of the story, and on top of that base, there are the jokes that only Yuki-san, who is so honest, can make, and the sensible comments from Hitoyoshi-kun. The balance is exquisite, and it’s comical.

But in the flashbacks, Yuki’s time as an assassin is depicted. Yuki’s lines and expressions are the result of her experiences, and they are full of seriousness. I also found it interesting how the comedy and seriousness were constantly switched on and off, and I thought it was a work that I could watch without getting bored.

–The fact that the title is “Meido” (Underworld) rather than “Maid” really describes Yuki-san.

Ueda: Yes, it does have a rather ominous feel to it (laughs).

Kumagai: But I really think it’s a perfect title for Yuki.

Ueda: I think her loneliness and sense of isolation are oozing out of the title. It’s nice that it hints at the fact that she’s not just a maid! But the title also says “you,” so the point of view is that of a kind person, and I think it makes it clear that the two are the main characters.

–Please tell us your impressions of the characters each of you play.

Kumagai: Yuki-san is very clumsy and naive, but she does care about Hitoyoshi-kun and is very serious. But because of that, she sometimes makes mistakes (laughs). She’s also really cute when she gets depressed at those times, so I think she’s a great character. The embarrassed expression she suddenly shows is really cute!

Ueda: Hitoyoshi-kun starts off as a very sensible boy, and just as his name suggests, that kind-hearted feeling is apparent from the first episode. He has a very sensible sense of right and wrong and ethics, but as he talks he is able to see the good in others and has the capacity to accept Yuki’s clumsy side as well.

He has a strong sense of kindness, of wanting to do something to help others, and I think it’s because of him that Yuki is able to open up her heart more and more. I think he’s a very warm-hearted person.
