A year has passed since the battle at the “Sanctuary” depicted in the second season, and Subaru and his friends are living peaceful lives when they receive an invitation to the water gate city of Pristella. When they arrive at Pristella, they are not only greeted by a reunion with the royal candidates and their knights. How will Subaru and his friends overcome the schemes and crises that are coming their way?
The story continues from the second season that aired in 2020 and 2021. The long-awaited third season, set in Pristella, is finally starting to air!
Animate Times conducted email interviews with the cast! The first person to appear is Yusuke Kobayashi, who plays Natsuki Subaru. We asked him about the growth and changes he has seen in Subaru throughout the second season, as well as stories about the third season.
–What did you feel was the growth and change that Subaru experienced throughout the second season? Also, how did you feel about playing those parts?
Kobayashi Yusuke, who plays Natsuki Subaru (hereinafter referred to as Kobayashi): I think Subaru’s greatest growth in the second season is that he has become able to rely on others.
Relying on someone in a life-threatening situation is something that cannot be done without a great deal of mutual trust. However, it was a really big step for Subaru to realize that it was okay to rely on him and that there were such people around him. Once he realized this, Subaru’s sense of urgency eased a little, and he was able to relax a little when acting.
— Subaru played a role in helping Emilia and Beatrice face their past and move forward, but what did you think of the changes in Emilia and Beatrice?
Kobayashi: Emilia faced her past and grew stronger as she accepted her weaknesses, and Beatrice was freed from her long period of loneliness and, through her bond with Subaru, resolved to choose a new future.
I’m glad that Subaru’s words paved the way for the two of them, and I’m impressed that Subaru himself has grown to the point where he can fulfill that role.
──Please tell us about an episode from the 2nd season that was most memorable.
Kobayashi: The best episode was the “Parent and Child” episode. Subaru’s origins were depicted there, and I think many people had their feelings about him completely turned upside down.
Subaru has grown up a little by putting an end to the regrets and conflicts he has left behind in the present day, even if they were not real. This is an important episode that teaches us this.
–How did you feel when you found out that a TV series was being produced for the first time in about three and a half years, and how did you feel approaching the recording?
Kobayashi: Unlike the second season, when we didn’t know if there would be a sequel, I was pretty sure there would be a third season, so even though it was the same gap, it didn’t feel that long. My mindset is always the same, I’m trying to be closer to Subaru than anyone else and take good care of my own mental health.
──Please tell us your impressions after reading the script for the 3rd season.
Kobayashi: I felt that the unity within the camp has strengthened. The last season was a season full of trials for everyone in Emilia’s camp. I feel that we have overcome it and are finally standing at the starting line as royal candidates and have begun to walk our own path.
The lines are filled with nuances of mutual trust, so I hope you will pick these up while enjoying the anime.
