A TV anime series began airing in 2014, and finally a movie version, “Haikyu!! The Movie: Battle at the Dump,” was released, depicting one of the most popular episodes from the original work, “Karasuno High School vs. Nekoma High School.”
This year, the beloved series “Haikyu!!” celebrates its 10th anniversary since its TV anime broadcast began. To commemorate this, the “Haikyu!! 10th Anniversary -Connecting- Project” will begin in April 2024.
The project, which has the theme of “connecting,” will feature various events throughout the year, including exhibitions, with a finale event planned for 2025.
To coincide with this 10th anniversary project, Animate Times is conducting a relay interview that connects the cast members! In this article, we asked Kaji Yuki, who plays Kozume Kenma, about his feelings and memories now that it’s been 10 years.
–How do you feel about reaching your 10th anniversary? Also, please give a message to all the fans who have supported you for the past 10 years.
Kaji Yuki (hereinafter Kaji), who plays Kozume Kenma: When I talk about my life as a voice actor, I can’t leave out “Haikyu!!” and my encounter with “Kozume Kenma”. The 10 years I spent with them are definitely something I treasure.
The energy of the original work, the enthusiasm of the production team, and the love from everyone who supports us. It was all in one place that made it this far. It’s like everyone is playing volleyball! I’m truly happy to have been able to be a part of such an amazing team. Let’s continue to treasure the bond we’ve formed through this work!
–You’ve depicted a lot of matches over the past 10 years, but which one would you say is your favorite?
Kaji: There are many memorable scenes that come to mind, but I have to say the one I like best is the “Battle at the Garbage Dump.” Both Nekoma and we have been working hard for the past 10 years to make this match a reality. I’m really happy that this episode, full of such feelings, has been made into a movie version, which is the best possible version.
I have so many heartwarming memories, such as the earliest screening, the Nekoma-only stage greeting, and the screening event in Shanghai! I’ll never forget the smiles of the customers who enjoyed the film.
— Haikyu!! is full of heart-wrenching quotes, famous lines, and famous scenes, but looking back, are there any lines or scenes that were particularly memorable?
Kaji: There are loads of examples that come to mind, but if I had to pick one, it would be the long, single shot at the climax of “Battle at the Garbage Dump” that is shot from Kenma’s point of view.
I think this can be called a memorable scene in every sense, not only as a drama but also in terms of Director Mitsunaka’s ideas and direction, and the amount of work done by the animation staff.
Personally, it left a strong impression on me because it was an experience that I felt was a great joy for an actor, as I was able to connect with the character through “breathing” rather than through lines or words. I had a lot of fun doing the dubbing.
──『ハイキュー!!』に登場する学校は、どこも個性的で魅力ある学校だと思います。これまでに登場した学校のなかで、梶さんが試合をしてみたいと思う学校はどこですか？
梶：鴎台高校ですかね。『ゴミ捨て場の決戦』で烏野高校に勝利していたら、ぶつかっていたわけで。もしも対戦していたら、どうなっていたんでしょう？ ……とはいえ、”もう一回がない試合”を全力で味わえたので、少しも後悔はありません!!

梶：どうしても音駒がらみのエピソードが浮かんできてしまうので、あえてそれ以外を挙げるとすると……山口の「プライド以外に何が要るんだ‼︎!」という台詞、その一連のシーンです。
彼の強さや優しさ、成長をこれでもかと感じられるお話で、涙なしには観られませんでした。ツッキーと本音でぶつかり合うその姿に、心から痺れましたね。
──【アニメ「ハイキュー!!」10th Anniversary ―繋ぐ― Project】のテーマ「繋ぐ」に合わせて、次の浪川大輔さんへの質問をひとつお願いいたします。
梶：浪川さんと及川さん。「努力の天才」という意味で、僕は、お二人は本質的に似ているなと感じているのですが、ご本人的にはいかがですか？ また、浪川さんが「オレって天才だなー！」と思うのは、どんな時ですか？（ずっと天才だと思いますが。）
4月6日は、10年前にアニメ第1期初回が放送された記念すべき日。その10年後の本日2024年4月6日、テーマとして「繋ぐ」を掲げ、10年の歴史を繋ぎ、ファンの皆さまとアニメ「ハイキュー!!」を繋ぐ、アニバーサリープロジェクトがスタート！
