The title song is the ending theme for the TV anime “Mob kara Hajimeru Tansaku Eiyuutan” (hereinafter “Mob kara”), which has been airing since July 2024. In addition, the coupling songs include “Winning Shot!! feat. AYAME (from AliA)” (Aichi Prefecture Cable TV High School Baseball Theme Song), which features AliA’s vocalist AYAME, and “Pray”, which has been eagerly awaited to be released as a sound source.
In addition, the bonus track “Valkyrie Song” from “From the Mob” is included, making for a total of three songs of different styles. This album will illuminate the new path of Main Street.
A special collaboration project with Animate is also in the works. In the future, a variety of projects will be developed, including a serialization of songs for different situations in Animate Times, a one-day manager project at Animate stores both in Japan and overseas, a collaboration with Animate Cafe Gratte, and even the production of collaborative T-shirts with other creators. –When we spoke last time, you told us that “Strobe Fantasy” expressed Sylphy’s feelings. Could you please tell us again about your impressions when you read the original work “From the Mob” and how you interpreted Sylphy’s feelings in it?
May’n (hereinafter, May’n): When I was approached about the ending theme, I wasn’t given any specific instructions like “I want the song to reflect Silphy’s feelings.”
When I read the original work, the main character Kaito-kun was described as having lived his life as a “mob character,” an inconspicuous figure, and how he himself recognized that. The story of how Kaito-kun gradually becomes a main character while acquiring various items was very impressive, and I thought it would be good to use that as the theme of the song.
At the same time, I’ve had the opportunity to sing many songs up until now that contain the message of believing in yourself and moving forward, but this time I wanted to sing from a slightly different perspective, to find points of empathy that I can relate to and relate to who I am now.
–What was it about Sylphy that you sympathized with?
May’n: Sylphy is depicted as a being that serves the person who is summoned, a servant so to speak, but Kaito is more than just a master; he’s something more special. When I read the original work, I felt that he was someone who made me feel like I could use my powers more, that I could do it.
So, in this song, I wanted to convey the message, “The reason I can work so hard and enjoy myself is because of you.” I wanted to write a song about the idea that I am who I am because of the other person, the desire to support others, and the feeling that I am enjoying myself right now, so I made that the theme of the song.
–You’ve worked with Kusano Kayoko on two songs so far, and you said that you felt that “Strobe Fantasy” in particular was “a song that is very May’n-like.” And yet, I felt that there was something new about it, so what did you yourself think was “May’n-like” about it?
May’n: When it comes to anime endings, we are often asked to write ballad-style or relatively slow songs, but this time the production team asked me to write a more pop song. I had a hunch that it would be a new song. There are many different types of pop, so I thought it would be reassuring to work with someone who could create a song while keeping the core values that I hold dear and the style that I have as May’n. That’s why I asked Kayoko-san.
華余子さんは、ロック的な要素も得意とされていますが、元々ダンス・ミュージックが好きで、その方面にも強いんです。私がまだ本名で活動していた時期のことも知ってくださっているので、その頃からR&Bが好きだったということも理解してくださっていて。そういった背景も含めて、私の音楽的なルーツやリズム感をしっかり把握した上で、楽曲を作ってくださるので、安心してお任せできました。
――May’nさんの良き理解者でもあるという。
May’n：そうですね。私は意識していなかったんですが、どうやらリズムを細かく取る癖があるみたいで、それを華余子さんに指摘されてハッとしました。例えば、一般的には16ビートで取るところを、私は32ビートで取ったり、オンでリズムを取るところを裏拍で取ったり。こういったリズム感覚を華余子さんがキャッチしてくださっていて。それを意識したリズムトラックやメロディを作ってくださったそうです。おかげで、今回の楽曲も「自分らしい曲だな」と改めて感じることができました。
また、これまでの歌詞は、自分“が”頑張りたい、私は負けない！という自分主体のものが多かったのですが、今回は「あなたのおかげで今頑張れている」という相手への感謝の気持ちを込めていて。実はどんな曲でも、ライブでは確実にその思いを持って歌っているんですよね。なので、これこそが部長としての自分の気持ちだなって思えました。作詞をしている時はどちらかと言うと、自分らしさは意識せず、新しい歌詞が書けているなって思っていたんですけど、改めて楽曲を聴いた時に「すごく自分らしい曲だな」と思いました。
――確かに、これまでのMay’nさんの楽曲は前向きで力強く、リスナーにその背中を見せるような応援歌が多かったように思います。でも今回は、隣で手をつなぐような曲というか。
May’n：そうですね、これまでは「私は前に行くからついてきて」というような曲、引っ張っていくような曲が多かったんです。でも、改めて自分の人生を振り返ると、部長もみんなの中にいる存在だと思うんですよね。例えば、先生とか、女王とかってもっと上の存在じゃないですか。
――そうですね。それに比べて、部長はあくまで輪の中にいるというか。
May’n：だからこそ、これこそが私らしいと思うと同時に、改めて自分を見つめ直す良い機会にもなったと思います。
――華余子さんとのコラボレーションが、新しいMay’nさんを引き出してくれたところもあると思うのですが、このアニバーサリーというタイミングも関係しているのでしょうか？
May’n：ああ〜……どうだろう。誰かを応援することが自分のパワーになるというのは、私は野球で気付いたところもあるんですよね。
――May’nさんのライフワークである野球の影響がここにも。
May’n：そうですね（笑）。私自身、みんなにパワーを届けたいと思いながらいつも歌をうたっていますが、ファンの皆さんのパワーに引っ張ってもらっているところがあって、みんなからのエールというのを肌で感じているんです。
そのみんなへの感謝の気持ちはずっと歌にしてきていますし、自分でも常に感じている想いだったんですけども……でも、野球を好きになって、選手を応援するようになってから、「頑張れ！」とエールを送ると、逆に自分も頑張ろうと思えるようになったんです。応援をする力が自分のパワーになっているんだなと感じています。それに気づいた時、May’nとして、みんなに「頑張ってほしい」という気持ちを歌を通して伝えることが、私自身の原動力になっているんだなって、ハッとして。
――エールとパワーの循環ですね。May’nさんがみんなにエールを送ることで、そのエールがまたMay’nさん自身の力となって戻ってくる。それを野球で気付いたというのも、May’nさんらしいと言いますか。
May’n：野球を好きになって3年くらいですが、この3年間で自分の中にあった気持ちを言語化できるようになって、さらにこれまで気づかなかった部分にも手が届くようになった感覚があります。こういった経験を通じて、今回の楽曲に込めた思いが、より確固たるものになったのかなと。
