The protagonist of this work is Hojo Tokiyuki, who lost everything due to a rebellion by Ashikaga Takauji, a trusted vassal of the shogunate. Tokiyuki flees to Suwa, where he meets friends and overcomes the difficulties that come his way by “running away” and “surviving.”
Animate Times is running a series of interviews that delves deeper into the appeal of this work! In the ninth installment, we spoke to Toya Kikunosuke, who plays Fubuki. Fubuki may appear calm, but she actually has passionate feelings deep inside. Toya told us that Fubuki must have been excited when she saw Tokiyuki’s “talent for running away.”
— In the ninth episode, Tokiyuki defeats the superior Miasma Trooper with the help of Fubuki’s teachings and strategies. After that, Fubuki becomes a member of the Runaway Troopers.
Kikunosuke Toya (hereinafter, Toya), voice of Fubuki: At the end of the ninth episode, Fubuki finds out Tokiyuki’s true identity and is excited that he has found a gemstone. That’s when I felt like I understood him, “Ah, this is how Fubuki’s heart heats up.” He is usually calm and cool, but deep down inside, Fubuki always has passionate feelings. For that scene, sound director Fujita also gave us direction to “put more passion into it.” I think we recorded a really good take after many retakes, so it became a memorable scene.
–Fubuki also showed a slightly warlike side, wanting to fight the Corruptor, whom she considered a strong man.
Toya: Yes. He trained properly and I think he could probably see his own strength from a bird’s-eye view. He actually has the skills, the strength and intelligence to fight on equal terms with adults, and he can analyze and say, “I can hold my own against this opponent,” which is why he wanted to fight Furan, who he thought was strong.
–You mentioned “put your heart into it,” but what other directions did you receive as you acted?
Toya: When he was giving Tokiyuki the strategy, he told me to “speak calmly.” He may have been excited by Tokiyuki’s talent, but he taught him without showing it.
On the other hand, in the monologue when he found out Tokiyuki’s true identity and when he was faced with a meal, there was direction to “make it clear that he is excited.” Fubuki always has the same amount of heat in his heart, but there are times when he expresses it and times when he doesn’t.
–It seems difficult to express the subtle nuance of feeling passionate inside through voice acting.
Toya: Actually, we did quite a few retakes.
――今回の連載ではみなさんが口を揃えて、丁寧に収録する現場だったとお話されています。
戸谷：そうですね。とても音にこだわり、力を入れてくださる現場だったと思います。テイクを重ねたのは僕自身に足りない部分もあったからだと思いますが、結果的にすごくいいお芝居ができたと感じています。時間をかけて丁寧に収録していただけて、ありがたかったですね。
――弧次郎役の日野まりさんは、和気あいあいとしているところもあったけど、収録しているときはすごく集中していたとお話されていました。
戸谷：本当にそうでしたね。アフレコが始まるとスイッチが入って、集中して演じていました。
―― 一方で、逃若党のメンバーとご飯に行ったときは、戸谷さんがあんなにもボケる人だと思ってなくて、驚いたとおっしゃられていました。
戸谷：いやー、バレてしまいましたね（笑）。実はそうなんです。アフレコのときは緊張もしていましたし、吹雪としてちゃんとしなきゃいけないという気持ちがあったのですが、一度外に出たら素が出てしまうと言いますか。僕はもともとボケたい人間なので（笑）。
――なるほど（笑）。そういう意味では、ギャグシーンを演じるときは楽しかった？
戸谷：めちゃくちゃ楽しかったですね。どういう組み立てをしてボケるか考えてから現場入りしていました。それでも現場で、「もっとやってください」と求められることもあって。
例えば第九回で時行の正体を知って、粟を吹き出すシーン。あそこは「すごく汚くやってください」と言われました。そのディレクションを受けて、とんでもない勢いで「ぶー」とやったんです。やれることはマイク前に残してきましたので、オンエアがどうなっているのか、今は楽しみですね。
――時行役の結川あさきさんは、ギャグシーンに関しては「笑わせたら勝ち！」みたいな気持ちでみなさんがアドリブを入れていた気がするとおっしゃられていました。戸谷さんもそんな感じだった？
戸谷：ですね（笑）。吹雪が登場したのは第七回からなんですけど、それまでの話数の音声データをいただけたんです。それを聞いたとき、武将を演じる先輩方がかなりふざけているなと思いました（笑）。ここまでやっていいなら僕もやってやろうと思い、振り切ってボケた記憶があります。
