Interview with Fuka Koshiba, who plays Kate, and Kenjiro Tsuda, who plays Tyler, in the Japanese dubbed version of “Twisters” | The contrasting characters of Kate and Tyler. The difficulties and fun of dubbing, playing a role that closely matches someone else’s acting2024年8月1日(木)より、「巨大竜巻モンスターVS人類」の熾烈な戦いを描く映画『ツイスターズ』が公開中です。

Kenjiro Tsuda (Tsuda), who plays Tyler: Along with entertaining scenes, the film also depicts a solid human drama. It also incorporates modern depictions and satire, making it a very multifaceted and interesting work.

Fuka Koshiba, who plays Kate (hereafter, Koshiba): I watched it in 4DX, and it felt even more like an attraction, and it was very powerful. The music was exciting, and it was packed with a variety of elements, so it was a work that you could experience with your whole body. I felt so immersed in the movie that I wondered if I was really facing a tornado.

Tsuda: You’re probably wondering, “What would you do if you didn’t see this movie at the cinema?” This is a film that is perfect for 4DX, with its big screen and powerful sound. Also, watching the tornado blowing away all sorts of things might make your summer a little cooler (laughs).

— (laughs) Could you tell us about the characters of Kate and Tyler, who you two voice?

Koshiba: Kate is a hero who faces a giant tornado, but she also feels fear. Not only is she brave and cool, but her eyes are filled with fear of the tornado, which is why she is so captivating.

Tsuda: Tyler is a pretty “nasty guy” in the beginning (laughs). Glen Powell, who plays Tyler, is really good at acting out nasty characters. It was the same in “Top Gun: Maverick,” but the impression of the character changes completely halfway through, so I think he’s really good at creating a gap. It was really nice to see his true nature emerge as he gets closer to Kate.

Koshiba: At first, Tyler seemed to be making money selling tumblers and T-shirts, but he actually has a desire to help people. I think Kate also learned a lot from Tyler about how to face fear and the idea of “overcoming what scares you.”

Tsuda: While Kate and Tyler deeply understand that tornadoes are something to fear, they have been strongly attracted to them since childhood and see them as something beautiful. When I saw the scene where Kate was taking pictures of them with all her might, I realized that she really loves tornadoes. There are aspects to this film that go beyond simply “fighting tornado monsters,” and there are some interesting perspectives that I felt were profound as a film.

–Tyler has dedicated his entire life to Tornado, and his single-minded dedication was really cool.

Tsuda: It’s powerful. Halfway through, he treats the tornado like an attraction, and I think that crazy feeling is part of Tyler’s charm. He goes “Haaa!” like a cowboy (laughs).

Koshiba: (laughs) Tyler is fearless, but he also works hard for the people he loves. In the scene where he brings pizza to Kate, even though she immediately closes the door, he waits there.

I like the fact that he’s a bit like a dog, and that he seems weak when it comes to the people he likes. He seems to have a lot of free time with women, but in reality he’s very pure. When I heard it in Tsuda’s voice, that gap felt even more adorable.
