In addition, a concert featuring Sanrio characters and the entire cast will be held on Sunday, November 24th!
To celebrate the release of the album, Animate Times will be delivering interviews with the cast for 12 consecutive days. This is the second in the series, and this time we have Takeo Otsuka, who sings “Daijobu” (Bad Badtz-Maru). He talked about his memories with Sanrio characters and his thoughts on this project.
–How did you feel when you heard about doing an album of Sanrio character song covers?
Takeo Otsuka (hereinafter, Otsuka): I was surprised when I was asked to do a cover song. I never thought I would have a connection with a Sanrio character, so I was a little worried about whether I was the right person for the job, but I was also very honored.
–Please tell us about your memories of Sanrio characters.
Otsuka: I remember playing the “Bat Badtz-Maru” and “Kero Kero Keroppi” games when I was a child, and I still have Sanrio character merchandise at home.
–What do you think are similar to the characters you play?
Otsuka: We share a common love for sushi, so I feel a sense of kinship with him. Other than that, we’re completely different (laughs).
──Who would you like to listen to this album?
Otsuka: Sanrio characters are popular globally, so I want everyone to listen to them. I would also be happy if people who grew up with Sanrio characters as children would become parents and listen to them with their children.
Do you have any memories of recording?
Otsuka: I thought it was a great song, straightforward and uplifting with beautiful lyrics.
──Is there a phrase from the lyrics of “Daijobu” that you like the most?
Otsuka: I like the phrase “It’s okay not to be number one! Just have fun!” because it best captures the message of “It’s okay!” that I want to convey through this song.
